I think it's time related, but otherwise you can fire him if you really don't want to pay his salary. This was implemented so that you HAVE to pay a salary at least ONCE, to prevent people buying players for a game and selling them right after, thus never paying any salary while having good results

Yes, it´s time related, if you bought your player at 8PM you can sell him four days later after 8PM, happened to me few weeks ago

If you list him tonight, the auction should end before the economic update
