Does the gym just train another skill randomly each week? Each 'extra' pop between my trainees have all been in different skills even though they've had the same training.

exactly, that's my guess too, I've had the gym few seasons ago. It is randomly affected only another skill non affected by your current training.
The point is, you have those extra pops only if the decimal sublevels are very high, these were my assuptions:

- each player has 10 skills, each skill can have a decimal sublevel from 0,0 to 0,9 with the same chance

- about 1/10 of the skills for a single player will be available for the extra pop (so just 1=10/10)

- that single eligible skill should be chosen randomly by the training engine between the skills non affected by your current training

- in this lucky case, 10% of the training wil be given to that lucky skill (about 0,1 giving you a pop)

- with the same mechanism, you can have a 0,1 increase in another skill which has not 0,9 decimals, in this case you won't see a pop but you are coming closer for the next training

I'm sure someone strong in math and statistics can do much better

which has these consequences (just my feeling, no precise evaluation):

1- you can not have more than 1 extra pop in the same skill, no matter how long you train, or at least the chance is extremely low, because after the first extra pop, that skill will have very low decimals (<0,1) and it has to be chosen again 10 times for another extra pop (!)

2- you will have only few extra pops in a single player, usually between 1 and 3 in a couple of seasons, if the decimals are equally and randomly distributed, and the chance of a new one decreases after each extra pop

3- you can force some extra-pop (and your luck) by training some skills very near to the pop, hoping the gym will give you the remaining

4- it is not profitable to keep the gym many seasons if you train the same players for a long time (usually best their 2 first seasons at 18-19 age)

5- it can be profitable keeping the gym if you change often your players (after a couple of seasons or after the first 2 extra pops) maximizing the revenue in the market

Does it only include players that get training minutes?

Also, as my gym is level 3, does that mean that each player gets 3 skills trained? or does it mean that only 3 players get 1 skill trained? What difference do the levels make?

yes, as far as I know

Also, as my gym is level 3, does that mean that each player gets 3 skills trained? or does it mean that only 3 players get 1 skill trained? What difference do the levels make?

The rule says "more cross training slots", so yes, I suppose each trained player gets that little bit of extra training in more than 1 skill (maybe 3) or that he gets 3 times the CT in the same skill, this we can not know

I forgot one more important thing: the exact amount of CT is not known (maybe about 10% of the main training), so the numbers I used could be too much optimistic, we do not even know if level 3 gym is 3 times the level 1 or not

Nobody ever made serious evaluations, if you look at this old thread (297526.1), with a little of patience, you will find some numbers and extra guesses from our fellow managers
