I think at present shot blocking only affects the number of shots that are actually blocked... i think i agree that the skill of shot blocking does in fact both create blocks, but also "alters" shots in a way that makes it harder to score and currently that isn't in the simulation.

I would be in favor of a system which tried to create altered shots. It could be made more important in that we might allow off ball defenders to do the shot blocking, meaning if you get an open look on your man there is a probability that you get some help side defense to help alter the shot.

i dont know if i would put in the increased foul probability, as that would perhaps make shot blocking less important.. though i agree it is realistic.. i'm not sure i want to make a skill half good half bad... meaning if someone had a really high shot blocking ability than i wouldn't want them to foul a lot more because that would make them unusable.. conversely if they had a low shot blocking ability i wouldn't want them to foul a lot more, cause its not like people who suck at shot blocking try it a lot and fail.. so that means really I don't want shot blocking to affect the number of fouls people get.

obviously this altering would happen less for 3 pointers than for jump shots, which in less would be less for inside shots.

a related change i want to make is the way the zone defenses work, i want to make who defends the actual shots probabilistic rather than straight up 1 vs 1 etc... and make it a function of the shot type. right now they effectively do that, but its sort of indirect and particularly looks weird cause the matchviewer shows it as being the straight up defense when really indirectly everyone is defending.

Thanks for the very quick reply. I just kind of started this as a discussion piece - I'm all for anything that makes better use of the SB skill.

For the fouling part - my idea was for players with really bad shot blocking to foul more often. However, this could be modified with experience or other factors so that if they were really bad, maybe they wouldn't try to block at all. Again, it was just an idea.

I really like your off ball defenders idea - also the change to zone defenses sounds great! I didn't know the zones worked that way in BB so thanks for the info.

Another idea... Have shot blocking contribute a small amount to the global inside d of your team.

i thought about the adding to the inside D, but really that seems sort of silly.. why have two ratings for one thing?

for the fouling thing... so then there is some mid range of shot blocking that is actually worse than bad shot blocking or good shot blocking? that seems sort of silly/unintuitive. I think i'd rather keep it just be a good thing all the way up the scale.

There is another benefit from this situation: one of the main benefits from Run and Gun offenses (and fast-paced offenses in general) is that if you push the ball up the floor, there is a greater chance that Shaq will have to pick up Dwyane Wade, figuratively speaking. As far as I can notice, this benefit is being foregone right now, so instead you just get to chuck a lot of shots.

The problem is, of course, that fast offenses are still clearly overpowered, so I am not sure how to sort out the checks and balances there.

The shotblocking attempt shoulde be influenced by shooters's FT skill. Especially inside shots of big men. Poor ft shooters should be blocked more foten than good ones. Check how many of Okafor's shots was blocked last season because of his poor FT%. Also if dunks, hook shots etc. are not just presentation things, there ae different types of shots some of them easier/more difficult to block than others.

Why?Shot blocking could work as jump range,as a multiplier of inside defence if you want to implement it

Why? If you raise the amount of fouls in missed blocks trys, you will usually block those guys, which don't hit their ft.

Maybe this way was to complicated, but it haven't to do with the shooting ability from the field.

I don't see why. We were talking about inside shots anyway.
