If you care about making things better, provide better information and make this a bug report (24231.3), and not just a complaint:

- How did you tell your coach to handle substitutions?
- Which player was in each of the 15 lineup slots?

Sorry, i was really angry because of the surrealist match I´ve seen tonight.

a) Strictly Follow Depth Chart
b)Center was going to play 48min, no backup, no reserve in this position. There were 2 PF on the bench, 1 was the Backup PF, and the other was the Backup SF. The PG who played was the SG reserve, ant the other the backup of PG and SG.

At this point, without the Center, my backup PF should have played as Center. In any case never a SG Reserve can play as Center, and 2 PF stay sit on the bench.

Why did my coach choose a PG instead of a SF or a PF? I don´t know, but you should search why to make the game engine normal.

See u

My understanding is that if you leave any slots empty, the substitution results are not well-defined. This should probably be clearer... maybe a warning should come up if you try to submit a lineup with empty slots (maybe it does already, I don't know).

Anyway, I don't think there's a bug here. If you really want the same player to play 48 minutes at a position if possible, then you run the risk of not getting the player you want in that position. If you want a decent player to come in the worst case scenario, set a sensible reserve, but risk not getting 48 minutes from your starter.

Possibly BB-Forrest can comment more, he's the expert.

Well, if you see the match, you could say it´s a bug. Maybe it´s a suggestion to change when a player is fouled out and there is no backup or reserve, choose the best player possible from the bench, and not the player who´s sitting next to the coach :D.

the problem with this is that it becomes difficult to tell the difference between someone who set a lineup incorrectly, and someone who left things blank intentionally. We dont want the algorithm to pick the "best" player automatically for teams that don't set lineups correctly. Otherwise people could just leave blank backups and have the computer figure it all out for them.

Interesting. Best rosterwise or best matchupwise?

No i read it right. I guess it is only (as it should be imho) true in case of no lineup set at all - say empty slots and let coach decide is not the case. That's why I was asking, as long as coach picks from depth chart, let coach decide settings are there or lack of substitutes for any reason, some mechanism for coach is used.

at present some mechanism is used, its just not a very good one...

I mean, I have to say, I feel a bit that people are being a bit... I want my cake and eat it too... i want 48 minutes of one guy playing.. but if anything crazy happens, I dont want to be responsible for taking that risk and I want the game to not punish me for taking that risk. I think actually those are exactly the sorts of tradeoffs that make a game fun. You take a risk you get a reward or you else it doesnt work and you suffer the consequences.

If it is any help: I think that it has always been perfectly clear that computer-lineups are "bad" lineups. Otherwise some unmanaged teams or bots would have a far better performance.

And yes, it is subsequently perfectly clear that we get the same bad picks, if the substitution slots have been left blank.

Definitely, definitely no bug.
