You have to chose first name and last name from the database of the country you are playing.

This is an excellent suggestion.

I really don't see why people are so worried about this. In Australia there are ridiculous team names everywhere and I can think of several that are also potentially offensive like "C U Next Tuesday"or "The Cleveland Steamers" for example. Likewise anyone can rename themselves at any time with no moderation and no cost yet the sky is not falling. The only place where it is a bit out of control is in chat where people constantly impersonate other managers and then kick others from chat leaving the victim with no idea who did it.

I also like what the next user said, that if you end up naming your player Osama Bin Laden or something similar you will get a free one way trip paid for by the US government to Guantánamo Bay Cuba.

The only way it could work would be to have a list of first names and a list of names per country, and a list of automatic rejected combinations. (famous people and unhappy combinations like "Jean Cule" like Perpete said).
I don't have a problem if a combination is used a lot, you already have a thousand John Smiths in the game as it is anyway.

Players' names and teams' names are two different things.
You have an unlimited amount of possibility for naming a team where you can define a list of most common names for a country, even if it's 1000 names.
And on a personnal note, I find it less problematic when a team has a non-realistic name than if a player had one. Just because a team will always belong to its manager, not the player.

if we only let them choose what is there...there will be an endless rain of requests to add names, spellings and so forth...and every nation needs an LA to monitor it.

Well, we have a brilliant database in Suomi. There are very few omissions; there are probably some family names that have died or will die in near future. The only real current issue with our database is balance, and that can't really be tackled with the current structure and tools. Allowing other names than the ones in the database pretty much means allowing made-up names for my country/language.

Even with our excellent database, a "pick freely from a database" naming scheme for players would probably result in a bit of a mess. Limiting it only to Supporters etc. will just make the mess smaller. I don't really know what I think about the proposals to let users name their players. I'm just quite unsure the potential fun would outweigh the problems.

The idea of only choosing names from a dropdown list is too restrictive and unnecessary. If we are gonna do that then we also need to create a dropdown list for team names.

Well, not exactly. After all, the naming schemes are different right now. There is no need to make the two things the same.

I don't see why someone is against having a guy named 'Mr X' (an example of something unrealistic) is on the other hand OK playing teams named 'Ilikebutter' or '555777222 bleep''&' or 'LA LAKERS' or ';);P)' etc.

It's a question of what is practical. I'm not saying it's an easy task to build the name databases, but it is a task that is mostly done already. Building a team name database is a huge additional task.

If limited freedom (lack of local colour and tradition) is okay, we could of course just use the bot team name database and have the LA teams translate that.
