Cup Watch
We finally reached the quarterfinals of the Singapore cup with 6 SBBL and 2 league II teams. Things can only get tougher here as only the elite will remain.
The reloaded and re-tinkered roster of SG Young Guns will take on league II.2's ranked 34, Serangoon BBC. SG Young Guns recently went on a free agent shopping spree, loading its already great roster with even stronger cast consisting of G Marek Bujak and big man 7' 3" Enrique Toro. But its the old man, Hasse Niemivaara who just took over as the league leader in scoring with 26.8ppg, still getting it done at the offensive end. Hasse Niemivaara can also get dish it out when needed (4.7 apg). When other players of his age are hanging up their jerseys or seeing more time on the bench, Hasse Niemivaara is still showing youngsters that he can ball. And Serangoon BBC's G Patrick Côtelle and G Leung Ghee Soon will have front seats for The Hasse Show with the task of guarding the prolific scorer. Serangoon's F,Wira bin Dewan, leads the team with 15.2ppg, 10.1 rpg and undersized but powerful C Ignacio Donella does the dirty but important job of collecting offensive rebounds (2 orpg). SG Young Guns have all the players to win this but Serangoon BBC, having taken down NEWBak Ku Teh Kings earlier in the cup, cannot be totally counted out.
The no1 team in Singapore, who blew by Flyer Sonic last week by 72, Compassvale United (CPU) will go up against the top team in league II.4, JOLAS BALLERS. If JOLAS BALLERS G David Sota and C Iván Fivaller are not religious people than they might want to consider being one because most of JOLAS BALLERS best players plays the same position as CPU, and CPU's players seems to be on a whole different level. David Sota, the top scorer of JOLAS, will likely be playing crafty G Yeo Tse Hui throughout the entire game and CPU has tons of options like Tanausu Galeno, Lin Baoxiang and Huo Xiangsong to throw against JOLAS' veteran C, Iván. Maybe even fan favourite F Divyagovrsabhadhvaja Manjit (gd luck to the announcer) will make a rare appeareance to defend against Iván. JOLAS however doesnt have many options to go against F Ruudi Kallas, who is still an extremely efficient and accurate shooter, having shot less than 50% in only 5 out of 18 played games with a good number of them attempting over 15 shots. JOLAS can only pray that everything goes wrong for CPU and right for them tommorrow at the Compassvale Indoor Stadium.
They have played with each other many times in the past seasons but this time Shohoku Backers will be visiting Singapore Showstoppers(SSS) in an exciting Singapore Cup match. Last league game between the 2, SSS came up on top with an 108-83 win and veteran G Urbano Di Giuseppe scoring 34points. SSS still has to watch out for the same man, Shohuku F Daugalis Špilevskis who dropped 31pts during their last meetup in the league. It is also a good idea for SSS to watch out for the sensational rebounding capabilities of C Alfred Ethan Capatan and F Simone Mocini. Shohoku will definitely rely on those 2 for those easy 2nd chance points so SSS should keep them off the boards at all costs. Shohoku's new acquisition, Lo Cheng Li, will be having his first test against SSS's G Ong Yi Ying. It should be exciting to watch the 2 scoring guards battle it out to see who is the better scorer and facilitator for the team. It is not the first time the 2 teams met so they should be familiar with each other's offensive and defensive tactics. If Shohoku wants to take some risk and come up with something new to surprise SSS's defense it just might work, otherwise SSS can just stick to whatever tactic works for them in the last league game. Still, this game can go anyway since both team's players are pretty even.
