The issue isn't solved. Because odd or even number of participants depends on how many teams all around the world get double (league and cup win). There should be special rule which garantee addind one more team if the number is odd, but if the number is even, this rule wouldn't be aply.
With your suggestion of special qualify round, which teams play this qualification and which get automatic participation in group play?

How it can be run last week of the previous season until champions are not known?

Simple: make the runner up and winner automatic qualifiers.

Also, a pet peeve of mine. Remove the aspect where all previous winners automatically qualify.

I thought you had the idea of the qualification game. I was just chiming in on when it could be played. Maybe I misunderstood something.

I think you also suggested something about world rank. It could be used to determine who plays the game(s). I don't know how I feel about world rank as it still has some issues - but I guess it is as good as any.

No, my suggestion was about adding one team if there is odd number of participants qualified by all current rules. But this new rules wouldn't be used if there is even number of participants. My suggestion was only about how to find this one lucky team.

After thinking about it, my suspicion is that things will shake down much the same way as the consolation tournament. The draw will probably be somewhat random, with the chance of playing the same team more than once. So the number of teams in the round robin will probably not matter much.

Why should past winners automatically qualify? To me, it makes very little sense. Although, I must admit that the tournament does not captivate me very much. Well, maybe if I played in it one day it might. ;-)

I know you can't compare BB to real life. But I am just wondering, is there any tournament in pro sports where all the past winners automatically qualify?

Pretty much anything major-event wise in golf or bowling. Sometimes you even get a "Lifetime Exemption" to all events from a certain event in those sports.

The number doesn't matter?
Example - there is 145 participants (this season was 144) in group play. Each round the draw makes 72 pairs by random and 1 team left. What about this one team left? 8 teams would have only 7 games instead of 8? Or if someone is unlucky and by random he is more than once remaning team he could play even less than 7 games?
It really matters!

BBs always adds new countries in even number so that Consolation Tournament works ;-)

I think one example would be the Masters golf tournament.

Please do not put this game in with golf or bowling... First, I hate those games. ;-)

Second, your skill can stay pretty consistent in those sports from year-to-year whereas in BB (or most any team sport) that's usually not the case.
