my understanding is that it is more salary based than pure skills.

The trouble is that the capping salary can be different from one player to another (and from one position to another). Although depending who you talk to, some people say that this is because there are sub-levels on potential.

I prefer the view that there is one formula for skills capping (unlike salary where there are 5 formulas). And although it correlates well to salary, it is not a perfect match.

You can find players with quite high "rating" or salary, compared to their potential, on the market so dont trust that to much. You can train players even after they hit the cap.
Here is a list of the highest salaries found per potential: (118426.15)
But you are more likely to notice decreased training efficiency around the salary of: (118426.3)

I also am not a big proponent of the sub-level theory as it seems overly complicated and rests on the assumption that salary and potentially are directly linked - it seems bizarre to me that they would link the two, particularly considering the fact that they've made the salary of top players float against the BB world economy.
Just because BB nerds haven't been able to crack the potential formula doesn't mean that we should assume a mysterious sub-level.

So it's based on salary? So my 74K Superstar PG/SF should have no problem training his inside game?

That's one theory. That's not exactly what I would say, though.

So my 74K Superstar PG/SF should have no problem training his inside game?

It depends, has he had training since the season started? If so, you need to get a salary estimator to see an approximation of his current salary.

If he has had no training since the start of the season, I would say he still has lots of room to improve. So you should have no problems with the skill cap. However, age and height might make things slower than you would like.

Arel shouldn't be slowed down by any sort of potential or salary cap for many seasons if you train him as a small forward.

That may be the case, I can't tell Arel's skills. However, it seems to me that Abbott must have capped at around $80K in salary (probably less?). This is considerably lower than the $100K salary cap at the max end for p. allstar. So while I don't think you are saying this, I just want it to be clear that depending on skills, players can cap sooner or later on the salary chart. Some players even cap outside the ranges defined in the forums.

I just decided to stop training him as I didn't feel it was worth it to train him at 26.

My mistake. I thought he was capped since he had no pops this season.
