Well, it is much more effective and easier to remember if you are considering a lot of players, in my opinion. A lof dates and times, or a timer that goes :

3d 4h 15m 12s
When presented like this, you can negate the days, hours and minutes as they reach zero, allowing you to focus on clusters of players in a given timezone to maximize your chance of getting one of the players at a decent price. Also, for those that have to plan their day and does not have access to buzzerbeater at any given moment it is easier to have visibly easy approximates of the bid deadline. I'm not sure the seconds are needed, perhaps they can be shown in another more subtle color or grey.
