Not sure when they added it in-game, think it's been there a season or so at least?
(BTW, this might amuse you -- i had to look up the term "dead-rubber" just now)

Offhand, "garbage time" is triggered when there's a dead-ball (clock stoppage), & you have a 20+ point lead -- from about the last 2(?) minutes of the 3rd quarter on. So basically it's when the game is 3/4 over and it's a blowout. But yeah, the coach pulls all your starters & puts in your reserves to protect your starters from injury & whatnot.

& If the game gets close again (think if the lead drops to 10 or so) then your starters will come back in on the next dead ball.

(Someone else can give you the *exact* numbers on all the above, I just gave a close approximation.)

It seems that it is a sliding scale. The less time on the clock the lower the points needed to activate garbage time. I personally really like the garbage time aspect. It really can help manage game shape.

But it can really screw up training minutes.

Well I had a 40 point lead in my last cup game, & garbage time was triggered with 1:31 left in the 3rd quarter. There was a dead ball with over 2 minutes, but it wouldn't trigger then. But yeah, same thing with me a lot of games... rooting for a triple double but the player gets pulled.

Not sure what the sliding scale is though. It's still 20+ partway through the 4th quarter. Or at least it used to be. I've had a few games with an 18 point lead & 8:00 left in the 4th quarter. On a dead ball, my starters still stayed in...

Well, yea it can, but that's usually during Thursday but I doubt that happens a lot if you plan your minutes well. I mean, there are three games a week right? Unless you have 15 player team with no bit part players, I don't see how your minutes can get messed up.

I've had many games where my trainee was subbed out anytime after 36 minutes.

You need to learn how to set your lineup so that doesn't happen.

Don't know i only ever play Strictly Follow Depth Chart. The other options don't look that appealing.
