I played FCP quite a bit back in the day, so I have some experience with this. The key, I feel, is to maximize your possessions. My guards were vastly superior to my bigs, so I’d use FCP to balance out the possessions lost from lack of rebounding (here’s an example (6327175)). Only with FCP can you get 25 more field goal attempts than your opponent when out rebounded 70 to 45.

In terms of maximizing salary efficiency, there are two main ways to go, but they both include two common skills for guards: OD and Handling. I believe OD is the main factor in forcing turnovers, but handling may also play a role. At the very least though, handling prevents you from turning the ball over, which is just as important in winning the turnover battle.

The skills you’d want are relative based on level of play, but for the purpose of this discussion we’ll focus on what you’d want at the top level. Ideally, this means 20 OD and 20 HD for the guards and SF, and 7+ OD/HD for the bigs.

Beyond that though, you need a team that will win the possession battle, and be able to take advantage of those possessions that you get and convert them into points. One can either go with an inside or outside offense.

With an inside offense, your PG will be your most expensive player, because in addition to high handling and OD, you’ll also want a good amount of passing. The PG/SG/SF don’t need JS/JR, otherwise a team like this would be unaffordable, but they do all need high levels of driving and inside shot. You’ll want the bigs to be around 17/10/13. Great IS and just enough rebounding to get by. WIth this model, in theory, you win the possession battle with steals, or at least keep it close, and then take advantage of your team’s ability to score efficiently inside at 5 positions.

Another possible path would be to have a PG/SG/SF with high JS/DR/IS, and 10/10/20 bigs to control the boards. Ideally, the bigs would also have decent JS/JR/DR so that they could be of at least some threat offensively. This wouldn’t necessarily be a great offense, especially due to the fact that a PG with decent passing may not be affordable, but theoretically that would be outweighed by the advantage in total possessions that you would gain.

And of course, you’d want proficient stamina for your entire team.

Handling to a certain extent. I don't have proof, but handling basically just means moving the ball around without turning it over. You need hand skills for that. I figured that if you HAVE hand skills, why shouldn't it help in steals as much as it does in avoiding turnovers??

Handling: Allows the player to avoid losing the ball to the opposing defense while dribbling. Important against a pressing defense or, in general, against good perimeter defense. Teams with good handling will have more success at creating quality shot opportunities.

The game manual disagrees though.

haha then you can say that I'm a rebel I think HAN does play a minor role, especially during steals against a driving player. Maybe its wrong, but whatever, right? Which sane person plays FCP in a serious match anyway?
