I would say that ROY would be the rookie with best general averages in the league. I know that for some leagues that would end up being very low due to the talent of rookies and the minutes that are given to them.

For 6th man, it would be almost the same but any player below a certain number of average minutes per game.

For defensive player I would say take the average steals, blocks, and rebounds. However, that gets complicated when you think about how to weigh each of those as bigmen will get a lot of blocks and a lot of steals and guards will get steals and not many blocks.

Keep it Tru

ROTY is the hardest one, beucase most of the time, rookies don't get minutes in league games, but they do get minutes in scrimmages/cups.

Or alternatively, because you are training them, they are getting 48 mins at one position, and often their stats are a bit.... well.... crap.

eg: This is my rookie so far this season.
Name, Games, Minutes, FG, 3PFG, FT, OR, RB, AST, TO, STL, BLK, FLS, Points, Rating.
Kelley Ballard 6 33.8 16-40 0.400 1-3 0.333 0-3 0.000 1.7 8.2 0.0 1.3 0.8 1.3 4.0 5.5 6.2

Not exactly the most impressive. 5.5 points per game,.... although the 8 rebounds is pretty nice!

But once im out of the cup, he won't play another league game, so he will probably max out at less than 10 games for the season. And taht will be common for all rookies in the league. In fact, i think there are probably less than half a dozen rookies actually playing minutes in league games in my division.

So whilst it would be nice, its kinda pointless ... know what I mean?

nah no way, rating is influenced by minutes played, which is dodge.

Oh, I thought it was influenced by your defence.

This is a good idea.

And if someone wants their Rookie to win Rookie of the Year, then they should play them appropriately to get the stats they need for their first season to win the award. It's a managerial decision that a manager would need to make. Do I play this great rookie to get him the award, or do I manage him differently so that he is getting the minutes and training he needs, but is not optimally being played to win the reward? That is a fun and tough choice.

its influenced by a lot of things, game shape, etc, but in general, it is understood to be a reflection of defensive capability as well as other things.

But its also retrospectively based around minutes played. A dude that only plays 20 mins in a game will get a higher rating than when he plays 30 minutes, and then again if he played 40 minutes.

So there you go! Learn something new every day!

I also think that this might make people lean towards keeping their rookies more. If there is an award that could increase merchandise they might push to try to get it and keep their rookies.

with this point i AGREE with trent and tom bane. the ROY award should be instituted. Though rookies in generally dont have great stats since they get less minutes, my friend Tom Bane made a great point that its the manager's decision if he wants his rookie to go for the ROY award and give him the opportunity to play.

Tom Bane also made a great point that for manager's to be motivated to play their rookies, the ROY awardee will give the team a boost in merchandise and attendance even if for the first 5 games of the following season, provided that the ROY is still with the team and didnt get sold in the ensuing off season.

See , Tom Bane, we agreed!

Thanks, abu!

I like this addition to the idea. It's a solid in game boost that helps your team in exchange for playing a rookie that might not be ready for prime time.
