I suggest to visit the site www.buzzer-manager.com and use the salary calculator there to play around with it to find out the impact of each pop on each skill on salary and potential usage. It's pretty tough to explain consisely in text, as all 5 positions have different salary formulas. For example, for a PG, Handling greatly increases salary but it doesn't for a SG, up until the point where it's high enough for him to become a PG.

To train a player salary efficient is to try to balance him on the edge of a position switch, so you know you're not paying too much for a certain skill. If you have a SG, you can train passing for almost free until a certain point. You can use the salary calculator to find that point; just set JS/JR/OD/HA/DR to 15 and PA to 7, and make it 1 higher and check when he becomes a PG. That's the sweet spot for salary efficiency.

Man this info is golden. I wish I had this info back when I first started. I have some really tough decisions to make this coming first-part of the season.

Also why set primary guard skills (for example) to 15 to determine when PA for guards aren't worth it anymore? I would assume because training past 15 would not be worth the money you'd have to pay for that pop.

In my case 15 is just an example. It's hard to say when it's not "worth it" to train a skill further, because it depends on many factors. It can be that it becomes to expensive salary wise, but that depends on what league you're in because in higher leagues you can afford higher salary. It could be not worth it to train 1 skill because another skill would need it more, but that depends on your player.

Generally speaking, you can train any primary skill to 15 and it will be helpful as long as you do it balanced with the other main skills (they are around 15 too). Then you need to think about secondary skills to, I like mine to be at least half the level of the primary skills. Beyond that, you need to think about what you want for your player before you train it higher. For guards, OD can be higher as it's a very effective skill. If you want to run an outside offense, you can increase JR beyond that.

Wow, training OD to 19 on a 196cm player with handling at 11? You took the negative elastic effect to a whole other level.

Each skill is cheap in a vacuum. If your player was JS 19 and OD 7, yes he would have 25k salary, but that's still cheap for a player with JS 19.
With that being said, as others pointed out unbalanced players cost way less, but you can use them only in specific situations. For exampe, if you'd train Brandon's IS up to 19, his salary would be less than 20k. But if he played as a C on offense and SG on defene, he'd be as efficient as possible for that little salary. Of course you could do that only in inside tactics.
