If you don't set a player as starter for a given position, but do pick a player to act as a back-up or reserve for that position, I would expect the back-up to play there.

Of course, you could always try it for yourself and answer this most vital of questions!

I'm pretty sure fans only enter in certain game situations (fouled out or 0 stamina (very rare)).

So even if you left it empty at starter, backup and reserve, if you have enough players to start the game, someone will fill that gap.

Can't give you 100% on this because it never really happened to me, but that's what I read around.

Thanks, thats a shame - it means that I'll have to keep more players than i need due to balance training for my VIPs:)
