Homegrown players effect the merchandise...More players you have, higher your revenue will be
When you start the game you have player/s that they have star:if you press on them you can see that you can not sell them for the period that is written on them,only to fire them
My opinion they are useful on your team,so use them on position PF or C and make training one position (PF or C) the young ones that you want
So you can train 3 young players in 1 position per week

You don't really lose anything if you play those tutorial players or not. Only small effect might be that because your merchandise revenue is partially based on player salaries, it's more beneficial that your highest salary players get good stats in your league games compared to the lower salary players. However, with your salaries, we're talking about only 100-1000 dollars per week. So as an example, if player would have great stats and give you merchandise revenue that is 10% of his salary, it's more beneficial to have player with 10k salary than 5k salary. But to clarify, the star player -status doesn't have any effect to merchandise or any other financial details if we don't take the fact that you can't sell those players.
