if he is inexperienced he probably kept asking the ball, and once he received it wouldn't let go. ;)
I had a SF/PF for a while who performed great, but his passing was very low, so he shot a lot. I thought of it as once the ball was passed to him, he'd rather shoot, then to give a bad pass. If he has a good defender against him, he misses a lot, but won't see any better option than to keep trying...
