I'm not sure I understand.

If I paste a number, and then click a button, I will get

12345[player=XXX]

If I paste a number, select the number, and then click a button, I will get

[player=XXX] with the number replaced.

If I click the button, and then select the XXX, and then past, I get what I want,

(12345)

but that is the opposite of how bolding, italicizing, or underlining works,

If you click the button the XXX is already selected for you...all you have to do is paste.

Not for me. If click the button I get

[player=XXX]I

with the text cursor to the right of the closing bracket. (I've used a bolded capital I to show where the cursor is)

Yes but you got XXX marked automaticly you just have to click CTRL+V (paste)

The XXX isn't being selected for me. Should it be? I'm using IE6,
