Dribble and handling isn't the same.

Have you ever seen Oneal dribbling ?

Centers makes only move -> Handling

I didn't meant to imply that dribbling and handling are the same thing, just that dribbling is a part of handling the ball and that every player on the court does it.

Yes I have seen O'neal dribble, every single game I have ever seen him play. Some players are more effective when they don't have to dribble much but I have yet to see anyone play the game for significant minutes and not have to dribble.

I'm not sure what your last point means, but I agree that inside moves that centers have to make involve handling. Spin moves, drop steps, backing an opponent down or facing up all inolve handling the ball. Being able to handle the ball well will lead to better shot opportunites.

The point I was trying to make was that while a center can be effective and very valuable with poor handling, handling does help but does not make up for weaker inside skills. If two big men have equal skills in everything except handling, the one with more handling will be better.

I kind of thought handling for a center would mean ability to handle the entry pass.

My guess is that you have never played basketball..... Handling is a big part of every players skills in real life basketball!

I'm sorry i'm just playing basketball since about 15 years, playing in french National championship, and having a wage for playing... LOL

All my coachs since i'm young said to anyone : Don't Dribble in the paint !

My centers are in the paint, from 6'8" To 7'0" Heigh, they don't need to dribble during a game..

Sorry mate, if you play with 6'0" Center who can make coast to coast...

handling means how turnover prone you are really... so for a center this is less important but yeah means how good his hands are, how often does he mishandle the entry pass or how deft is he at avoiding those pesky gaurds from swiping the ball away. Ball handling doesn't always mean dribbling.

So how do we train centers on handling then? With "One on one" Team training perhaps?

Ask anyone in the states about handling. That does not specify dribbeling. You can handle the baal without. It can be alto about passing and how you handle the ball before a shot. With bad handling, you might make a bad pass or a crappy pass. So think about what lies in the word before you rip someone for asking about it.

Besides that, dribbling is required to make even the most basic inside moves. You can't even take a simple drop step without taking a bounce. (This is a dribble by the way)

Certainly you don't want to go into the paint merrily dribbling the time away, but it is quite improbable to be able to play the game, even on the inside, without dribbling. Not if you ever want to score anyways. Even Yao has to take a dribble or two pretty much every time he wants to make a move. Shaq takes 3, 4, 5, even 6 or 7 dribbles to get position, always has.


If you actually believe that your centers can play a game without ever dribbling then you are certainly not being paid to play the game.

The fact that Yao and Shaq dribble doesn't mean they have good handling. You'll rarely see them do crossovers and such to get past a defender.

Their dribble is very basic.
