well for me so far this year heres my players

Prodigious: .818
Mediocre: .875
Awful: .500
Inept: .500
Respectable: .827
Inept: 1.000 (6-6)
Prominent: .733

Probably not enough Free throws attempted to give a good indication, wait until they haev attempted 20-30 free throws, then re-do those percentages. Then FT will mean virtually something.

last season i had a guy with mediocre FT hit his first 11 FT's of the season, then ended up with a year percentage of around 65%.

Absolutely. The argument wasn't that they're exactly alike, it's that they're related. And I would argue that they're the 2 most related skills of all the trainable skills.

Because of that, my other point is that it makes a lot more sense to get a secondary pop from jump shot training with free throws than it does some of the skills that do.


I would actually argue that Jump Range and Jump Shot are the two most related. Whats the difference between a 17 ft shot, and a 24ft shot? Action wise, not much at all.

Free throws, in general, tend to be a non-jumping, fixed position shot, which is a different action to the normal jump shot. I know Crazy-eye said that you CAN jump when shooting free throws, but when was the last time you saw that? Last time i saw that in a game, I was 9, player junior basketball.

But overall im all for the current system. It works, gives Free Throws a certain 'place' of importance in the game.

i just say that, for people who might say that a standing free thow have another shooting technic. If you are able to make a uncontested jumper(50%) from that point, and not the free throw shot - then shot it like the jumper and then you should have 40% shooting percentage at least through nervosity and fans if not more because you aren't out of breathe and not in a hurry(and if that should the reason that you won't hit a shot from there, you need more then 2 weeks to get to 30%)

I think FT's Are important Because they are basicly Cheap points that you can get.( and they would really help in the clutch)
Like in my Last Cup Game(Against The War Machine) my team was up by 3 with 5 seconds left and one of my players got fouled he took 2 FT's and missed both the other team had the rebound and came down but luckily they missed the shot. but if they had made that 3pter. then I might not be in the cup still.

I have a guy that is usually at a season FT% of 69 and he normally dosen't miss that many. I can't win games without his Free Throw shooting.

My stats (only players with more than 20 FT's attempted mentioned):

.833 prominent
.906 proficient
.800 strong
.857 respectable
.700 and .690 average
.638 inept
.5 awful


(1 x 17 FT's attempted: .706 prominent)

It seems that last season, for me the difference between respectable and more was pretty small. The guys with lower than respectable FT all performed quite a bit worse.

I guess the formula for the probability of making a FT is:

(1-1/x)^2 where x is the FT skill with subskill.

This would yield the following probabilities:

atrocious: 0%
pitiful: 25%
awful: 44%
inept: 56%
mediocre: 64%
average: 69%
respectable: 73%
strong: 77%
proficient: 79%
prominent: 81%
...
legendary: 90%

fits pretty well with our observations, I think.

That's a nice formula. It underestimates it a little bit though, when you look at: (/community/forum/read.aspx?thread=179355&m=1).

You need a formula that would almost reach 100% when filling in x=20.

Thank you. The formula in your link looks even better.

Still, if you see a player on the transfer market, it sure pays off to have a handy little formula that allows you to estimate what % of his FTs the player will make, and (1-1/x)^2 sure is a bit easier to calculate than that. But the logarithm formula is probably right.
