How did everyone else here play a cup game against a bot or a team ranked below them and I got a cat in Division 2 who blew my doors off? Feel like the Sixers, the wheels are falling off my ride.

Pio Reina was on the practice court working up a sweat. Frustrated after Saturday night’s loss, this was his way of working through the frustration. His assistants joined him for a game of 2 on 2. GM Roberto Gurgone joined them.

“Who needs a blow”, he asked.

Byron Helm subbed out. “I do.”

The coaches continued playing, with each one subbing out every so often. No one noticed the small group gathering on the far side of the court.

A voice called out. “It’s 5 of ya’ll and 5 of us. 5 on 5, halfcourt, make ‘em take ‘em, since ya’ll are a bunch of old timers, you get ball out.” The coaches looked up from their game and saw rookie George Henderson leading a group of players on to the floor.

From the opposite end of the floor, an answer. “No way. Full court, the old guys can ref it. Coach Richards, you draft the teams.” Walt Colenbrander looked angry.

“Walt, you good”, Air Allnite asked.

“No. We got work to do.” That was as long of a conversation Walt felt necessary. He was in no mood to talk.

“What are you working on?” Air was intrigued.

“Everything. Shooting. Defense. Rebounding. All of it.”

Marshall Richards never got to draft teams. The three senior point guards on the roster took over and handled that task. Joy Beko came over to where the GM and coaches were.

“You done with your workout?”

Pio noticed something different with Joy. A bit of an edge to him today.

“Yeah. We’re all done here. We’ll leave you guys to it.”

Joy went back to his teammates. Pio spoke to his staff and the GM. “I think this is a players only thing. We should leave them to it.”

Marshall spoke to Air. “This don’t look like a normal shootaround.”

“Not happy with their performances. Pio made the right call. Let’s get out of their way.”

“Gentlemen, we need to do something a bit different tonight,” Pio began. “Walt Pasman and I had a conversation a few days ago. He wants to try something. Marshall, I think you have a plan for this. Byron, I’m sure you’ve been waiting for this. Run with it.”

Roberto looked at Air. “Don’t look at me”, replied Air. “GMs do GM stuff, coaches do coach stuff. Can you go work your GM magic on a scorer?”

“I did. Don’t you have coach stuff to do, like coaching them up?”
