i thought Houston's comeback against the Clippers was really interesting. for those who missed it, the Rockets were trailing by 19 in the 3rd period at Los Angeles, came roaring back and won by 10 points or so -- with James Harden on the bench for the final quarter. i am trying to translate that game into BB:

1) i have never been one to have stars -- it is very rare for me to have any player in the top 10 of the statistical categories. i, naturally, would like to see this as justification of team over Star as a path to winning.

2) the fact that it happened during an away game -- we have all seen / experienced collapses -- what would produce this in BB? difference in enthusiasm? GS? experience? or simply a statistical fluke?

3) Houston did it apparently with one massive defensive stud at C and a lot of hustle. maybe this is a model for a team?

i will say i would think the locker room dynamics and coaching decisions must be very difficult right now for Houston.

i rely upon BuzzerManager for guidance, and in the past i have found the team ratings to be reliable guides for how my team is performing. but this season, the relationship between getting better ratings and winning has broken down:

against the Cacti, we both got 13.9 game ratings, but my team category ratings were tilted slightly in my favor, 140 - 139. but i got blown out by 14 in the fourth and lost by 12.

against TnT, i made a tactical blunder by calling for a 2-3, and so suffered in the team ratings, 145 - 153. but my players' game ratings were up 15.3 to 14.6, and on the road, too. regardless, never in this one, and lost by 16.

in a private league game, neutral court, won the team ratings 168 -158, the player ratings, 16.5 - 16.1, but lost the game by 10.

finally, on Saturday, had a better team rating than GH, 167 - 163, a better player rating, 16.7 - 15.5, but was never really in the game, outside of a late run, and lost by 13.

my point is not shake my fist at BB gods and demand justice, but to wonder if there is a more recent generation of managers who are running very efficient, very skilled teams whose virtues elude or are otherwise not captured by my tried and true statistical categories.

The Great 8 is going to be a blood bath by season's end. 14 or 15 wins may win that division. Congrats to Toronto taking over first place this late in the season, it however will be short lived as Tucumcari finally gets a bye week with a 100 point differential. That being said Toronto can truly earn 1st place when they host the reigning champions this coming Saturday. Should be a great game that comes down to the 4th Q.

is there any rhyme or reason to RamQ's failure to provide lineups? as the national team coach, as well as having a team that reached this level, i know he can manage a team. but i can't figure a reason for tanking two games, home games, against Tucumcari and High Point. i think BM is an interesting squad, and was looking forward to those matchups. i can't figure it.

Perhaps, he's just highly inconsiderate.

well, he dressed out two for the Cup game -- and won -- but (and i did not know this), dressing out two means automatic loss, regardless of results -- which suggests to me RamQ is inattentive, not pursuing some deep, dark strategy.

I love how forfeited games are still played out normally, everyone (so earnestly!) going through with the charade. Players, fans, coaches, staff, refs, the TV network (when applicable)...

Then the instant the game ends... poof, 50-0 final. Energy expended by the forfeiting team is magically restored. But they've learned nothing, so no training. The non-forfeiting team did learn something, so they stay fatigued. Mario Lopez continues to host Extra.

i have long agreed with what was once the common understanding that home court was worth around seven points.

for whatever reason, i don't think that is the case, at least at this level. after some of the games i've played so far this season, i think the difference could well be closer to 20 points.
