Isn't it better to play your starter as a backup in the second game? If your players are of similar quality, it won't make any difference. And if your starter is much better.. he'll play more minutes anyway.

A backup doesn't get more minutes just because he is better (hope thats what you meant). He will ony come into the game if the starters are tired or you lead by enough points during the 4th quarter.

But the other thing is correct. If your players have similar quality the you can play them one game as starter and one as backup.

In my experience, the quality has no impact on how many minutes a player gets.

The coach will switch the starter with the substitute whenever the substitute is more effective compared to the starter.

This is not necessarily true if you're using Strictly Follow the Depth Chart. It is perhaps true that if the starter is tired the coach may decide to sub him out and get the backup to play. However, when it comes to a close game (especially the 4th quarter), it is mostly the starters who play most of the time, not because the coach want them to, but because substitutions is set as SFDC. So in my opinion the effect of the stamina is less evident when using SFDC (but I'm certain there is an effect, just not as much). In this way, in a close game, even if the backup has better skills and everything else compared to the starter (who sucks), it'd most likely be the starter who'll be playing because the substitution is set so.

Thats true, I totally agree here. But one more thing I wanted to mention. With SFDC it happened to me, that in a very close game for the last 3 minutes my coach decided to bring the backups (who were really worse compared to my starters). Just because it was time to give the starters a rest.
