Can't complain with our performance tonight. We took it up to a much stronger team, and were still in it with 6 minutes to play.

The game in five

1. Our offense got off to a good start, with Walker scoring 14 points in the first quarter, and Rieffel chipping in with 6. Noone else on the team scored however, and we lost all momentum when the bench came on. This was the story of the night - the starters would keep us close, but then the bench would kill us. Indeed we only got 9 points from our bench all night.

2. Walker remained the focal point of our offense, and took alot of shots in the second. Sadly he barely hit any, scoring only 6 points for the quarter. We only scored 15 points for the quarter, which killed any chance of making the game competitive. The third quater was closer, but sadly we weren't really within striking distance entering the fourth.

3. That all changed as Walker went dead set nuts to open the fourth, scoring 15 points in the first six minutes to drag us back within 10. Sadly, we weren't able to keep that momentum going, and we ended up losing by 20.

4. Where was the game won and lost? That's easy. Rebounds. I didn't expect to grab many offensiv boards with Walker at PF, but I didn't think we would give up so many with the defensive switches. It wasn't just the number of boards we gave up, it was that most of them were tipped back in for easy twos. My count suggests we gave up 19 points on offensive rebound tip ins. That hurts.

5. Taking away the tip ins, our defense actually did a pretty good job. Considering China pulled a high prodigious inside shot rating, I can't be too disappointed with the effort there.

Darby Walters medal

3. Leigh Reiffel. This bloke just keeps contributing each week. Considering he wasn't the focal point of the offense, he scored alot of points, did it efficiently, got a few assists, and grabbed 50% of our offensive board. With 1.

2. Lionel Walker. Wasn't his most efficent shooting effort. But he was expected to carry the offense on his shoulders, and didn't do a bad job of it. His three point shooting and ability to get to the line was a real highlight.

1. Vladimir Shishaev. Noone else really scored alot of points. So I'm giving the one vote to Shishaev because he was facilitating the offense at PG, and his job was to get Walker the ball. He did that. Got a few assists, and converted from his trip to the line. Did all he needed to do.

8 - Leigh Reiffel
6 - Dylan Scoggins
3 - Scott Schneider; Brent Degas; Darren Lonergan; Vladimir Shishaev
2 - Lionel Walker
1 - Jone Bogan
0 - Keith Anderson

Rudolph Radford medal

3. Vladimir Shishaev. Stopped his opponent from scoring, and stopped the ball from getting inside easily. Their PGs combined for just 5 assists and 11 points on the night. Also grabbed some defensive boards. Which is more than I can say for the rest of our team.

2. Scott Schnieder. The opposing PFs got a hold of him more than I would have liked. But without him on the boards tonight... I shudder at the thought.

1. Lionel Walker. Noone else really stood out here, but he did a decent job at SG at preventing the ball from getting inside, so he gets the vote.

5. Lionel Walker
4. Scott Schnieder; Vladimir Shishaev
3. Darren Lonergan; Leigh Reiffel
1. Brent Degas; Keith Anderson; Dylan Scoggins

Jackson Mansfield medal

Reiffel extends his lead, but there is a logjam on 7 votes waiting to take his place.

11. Leigh Reiffel
7. Dylan Scoggins; Lionel Walker; Scott Schnieder; Vladimir Shishaev
6. Darren Lonergan
4. Brent Degas;
1. Jone Bogan; Keith Anderson

Fantastic writeup as usual/ I really enjoy reading this and it is funny seeing the constant roundabout of these guys coming and going in the ABBL. One funny thing, you fairly much have to have Hall Of Fame potential to make the Aussie NT these days, there are only two guys with MVP potential which are Darren Lonergan and Steve Reimers. But there is one player with only superstar potential, the Jackson Mansfield medal leader Leigh Reiffel.

Lionel Walker is 32, do we have anyone in the pipeline that can fill his massive shoes?

Not that much coming through in the way of guards really. Burl Barth is probably our best bet - he is overseas now and seems to be getting trained, but his manager won't talk to me so I have no idea what in. Dire's boy Pierce looks decent, and whitewind's guards are good prospects. But hopefully some more names pop their heads up!

Hampshire is a 22 yo mvp guard who is currently on the market.

I missed out on him at the start of this season.

He is a potential aussie champ

I was bidding on him at the exact same time our teams came through for Utopia and I missed out getting him because I could work out how to get out of my Utopian team to get back to the auction and he sold for about 1.6mill.

Since then I think he might have had a couple of pops in passing

Agree that 2.8 mill is too much, but he is a player to bookmark and keep an eye on and perhaps even communicate with the owner/new owner

With the crop of SFs coming through you wont need guards or talls as you will just be able to run with a lineup of SFs

Just a reminder to all that our final game of the first group stage is on tomorrow night at 9pm.

Also, with some poor gameshape to our guards and an injury, I've added another player. Congratulations to Burl Barth, who will make his debut tomorrow. Barth was trained, and recently sold by Rooboy of the Hammersley Hammerheads. He was a gun in our U21 team a few years back, so congratulations to Rooboy for doing a great job training him. He is currently pklaying in Lebanon, and at just 24, is one to keep an eye on for the future.

Well, we got the win in a hard fought game. New Zealand Crunched us, and we were probably unlucky to not win by more. So plenty to be happy with here as we go through to the next phase of the tournament.

The game in five

1. Barth saw some action early on in his debut game, and started well, getting a dunk and a block in his opening minutes. He's a new favourite of mine ;) (Interestingly, in 14 minutes, he had a +/- of +17. That's pretty good in a close game).

2. The first quarter was a bit of an arm wrestle. Neither side could miss early, then neither side could hit late. A solid team effort by our boys, and a great solo performance by New Zealand's Searles, saw the teams go in near level at quarter time.

3. New Zealand blew the game open with a 2 minute burst that saw them open up a 10 point lead midway through the 2nd. The team had no match for Zahra, before a timeout was called and a well deserved rocket was given to the players. The rocked worked, as the team went in only 1 point down at half time.

4. The Australian team had rotated their players well throughout the night, and the fresh legs started to tell in the third. The team opened up a 8 point lead at the final change, with no real player standing out so far. However, on the negative side, Degas was having a stinker, shooting 1-6 and having just the 1 assist.

5. Degas was told in no uncertain terms to pass, and not shoot. It worked. He was in everything early in the quarter, racking up assists, and passing for quite a few more missed shots and fouls. However, the team let the lead almost slip, before using their fresh legs again to close out the game.

Hard to give votes this week, with a really even performance!

Darby Walters medal

3. Vladimir Shishaev - Solid offensive game from Shishy. I love guards who can score in LI, and he was our leading scorer, scored efficiently, and got a couple of assists. Plus he fouled out his opponent.

2. Scott Schnieder - Raffle it, but Schnieder scored well, had no turnovers, and gave off a couple of assists. That gives him a slight edge over the other contenders.

1. Lionel Walker - Pretty much see above. Scored a bit. Assisted a bit. Did his job.

Leaderboard

8 - Leigh Reiffel
6 - Dylan Scoggins; Vladimir Shishaev
5 - Scott Schnieder
3 - Brent Degas; Darren Lonergan; Lionel Walker
1 - Jone Bogan
0 - Keith Anderson

Rudoplh Radford medal

I have no idea.

3. Vladimir Shishaev - Shishy clean sweeps the votes this week. Nothing he did defensively shows up on the stats sheet, but he smashed his opponent, who took a heap of shots and missed most of them. That gets him the full votes.

2. Keith Anderson - Only had limited minutes, but did a decent job defending both SF and PF, and cleaned up on the board, which was vital

1. Brent Degas - Spent time at PG, SG and SF, and did a good job defending at all three, at picked up a couple of steals as well, and grabbed some boards as well. Good enough for a vote.

Leaderboard

7. Vladimir Shishaev
5. Lionel Walker
4. Scott Schnieder
3. Darren Lonergan; Leigh Reiffel; Keith Anderson
2. Brent Degas
1. Dylan Scoggins

Jackson Mansfield medal leaderboard

Aaaaand we have a new leader! Interesting quirk - no two players are on the same number of votes.

13. Vladimir Shishaev
11. Leigh Reiffel
9. Scott Schnieder
8. Lionel Walker
7. Dylan Scoggins
6. Darren Lonergan
5. Brent Degas
3. Keith Anderson
1. Jone Bogan

Next week the real test begins. It will be tough, but I think we can get 2nd, which would be a good achievment (albeit one that probably puts us on a road to China in the semis)
