But I know who Opie references. Then again for those hitting middle age like I am knowledge of the Andy Griffith show is mandatory.

As for our references. Alfred refers to former Greensboro General Alfred Webb (34288932) who is the leagues color commentator and Lee is Lee Thomas of Deronimo fame (20745076) who serves as the league play by play man. The dynamic between the two is kind of Frank Gifford/ Don Meredith esque.

Sybil and the occasional "vox pouli" reference are from the classic film "Network" https://youtu.be/c5Gf0VKXk5Q Sybil has fallen a long way since those days of yore. Picture a female version of Jimmy The Greek.

And BB2NIGHT is a play on the talk show send up from the 70's Fernwood 2 Night which starred Martin Mull https://youtu.be/kh0idSPH7LA

tonight's montage concentrates on that red white and blue orb that the competitors try to put in the orange cylinder 10' above.

Announcer: tonight as the season comes cascading to a close we look back on who has gotten the bounces and who has had the bad breaks. And though most issues are decided for the second season tonight we take one more step to finalizing the finishing order.

Over in big blue..

the generals celebrate a breakthrough season by taking time to reflect and recharge with the free pass at pride on tap.

while the brewskies battle for their playoff lives against breathers

while the bunnies look to capitalize on any brewskies misstep as they seek to stymie srar

and deronimo looks to work over the waffles as they prepare for hosting festivities during the conference playoffs.

over in club red...

masters still hold hope of climbing a bit further up the ladder as they are bringing the bacon home

the thieves seek to steal one from a kitties club that might be in cruise control

the lumberjacks will try to keep from getting egg on their face as hayward is hanging onto a first round home date for the postseason

and tornadoes look to take final control of the five spot with the free lap against inc

YES Sybil the soothsayer is here. Another edition of the transfer ticker and vox populi is there. And of course Alfred and Lee are everywhere. So stay tuned and try not to become unglued as it's time again for BB2NIGHT!!!!

In the first round of the playoffs, the 2 v. 3 matches are probably the most interesting, for both red and blue.

But, baring injury issues, league finals should be kitties v. Deronimo, especially if both team took it easy down the stretch, once #1 seed in each conference wrapped up.

I think both games on the blue side have intrigue. Generals and breathers split during the season each winning on the others court, though in both cases the generals put forth more effort. Nix being down for the breathers changes the equation but ain't no time to relax for Greensboro, but my 50th birthday is Wednesday so I am hoping my team can give me a little early present.

Deronimo did sweep the bunnies both times by double digits. But the bunnies are playing good ball right now. But never discount the bunnies.

Club red seems a lot more cut and dried. The kitties though are primed to get back to the finals. This however may well be the season Deronimo finally goes up.

BUZZERBEATER GRIPPED IN THE MIDST OF CRIME WAVE.

Aka "The case of the missing duckets"

This is the buzzerbeater community, over 13,000 clubs from all corners of the globe, all working towards a common goal, to be the best in the world. Backing them is a endless support system of trainers, doctors, PR men and others designed to improve the performance of the product on the court. But sometimes things happen where answers need to be gotten. That's where I step in, my name is Friday, I carry a badge.

https://youtu.be/vB6buYYt-bA

It was February 11th, a Tuesday, it was rainy in the Piedmont of North Carolina, and I was working bunko out of the "slaughterhouse" division. A curious collection of Americans in the USA division three league five, hence the Kurt Vonnegut tinged moniker. A recent issue across the buzzerbeater world with attendance figures had caused a financial panic . Investigators had been dispatched to come up with answers, to find a common thread.

2:48 PM: Detective Gannon and I headed out to the various arenas around the league looking for clues, for a common thread..

First off we started in the collective known as club red where we ventured into the litter box....stray cats were all over the place and the foul feral stench of catnip and spraying filled the air and every surface was covered in fine feline hair as Gannon soon saw his eyes water and his sinuses fill. " I should tell you Joe, if I don't get away from these cats we are gonna have a real problem" After finding team GM homercat and after citing him for failing to properly board his collection of cats we asked what sort of attendance issues he saw. "Yeah the numbers are off, but the arena looks full, I mean c'mon man we won 20 games this season!" We also spoke to Jay the Masters of Bb manager who also expressed concern, though he had bigger concerns on how to handle his opponent.

1:05pm our next trip was cross country to Hayward CA, normal travel time 5hrs, we made it in 23 minutes. We started by interviewing Lumberjacks manager netteb 16. After Gannon narrowly avoided being impaled by a falling oak our subject also expressed his concerns about the current posted numbers. He too noticed solid crowds but sub standard accounting numbers. Attempts to talk with phantom thieves manager mamaluigi5 were met with disdain, a fierce cussing in Italian and a Luigi planted on Gannons shoe, " I'd just gotten those shined Joe"

4:41 pm. Now our investigation headed towards the contestants in big blue or what is formally know as the big 8. Our first stop was in the New River Valley of Virginia where Hokied resides with his club Deronimo. After showing us his latest designs on his continuing effort to finally promote he too expressed disgust with the current economic trajectory he also though had no real answers. SThoma33 of the bunnies however pulled us over, "that] little prick in Greensboro, Lambini, word is some of his people are behind this, but you didn't hear it from me."

5:30pm: Where's our next stop Joe? Greensboro. Oh, that's a rough crowd, if we go down there looking like this nobody will give us the time of day. After a short trip back to the station we were outfitted in attire proper for coliseum tailgating

https://youtu.be/NIm8qNirTOk

After surveying this scene we decided to go visit the ticket office to see how robust sales were. How much for bleachers? $12, little steep dontcha think chimed in Gannon. Just then a shady looking figure approached, it was long time Generals bench warmer Pete Tanner, "come back 15 minutes before tipoff" .

Upon returning to our cover vehicle Gannon asked "Joe you think we have anything here" We might Bill, but we got to have something to collaborate this with before we move in.

To be continued

6:02 pm There is a boulevard of broken dreams trying to get out together in buzzerbeater...it is called relegation row. Ga non and I took a long trip along those roads continuing to interview managers. Very few had much to say, or those who did had little of interest. That is until we returned to the gate City to talk with Lambini's old friend Coach Fillmore. We caught Fillmore trying to patch up the remains of a season that shattered down the stretch.

"What can I do ya for guys?"

Fillmore , bunnies management suggested Lambini has people behind the issues with the gate that is all over the community. When we got there Pete Tanner comes up and says to come back 15 minutes before tip. Have you been hearing anything about that.

(Sigh) yeah, a lot of my people reported that he said the same and snuck them inside a side door of a side door for a sawbuck.

Anybody who will come forward?

I don't know man, our fan bases are pretty tight. Neighbors you know, but word is he has got guys all over the place doing this. And it's costing me money, costing Lambini money, costing us all money.

Just then his walkie talkie chimes. "Hey coach garden #3 is out of Carolina Pale Ale" Be right there....good luck gentlemen.

7:57pm: pulling into the parking lot we find a spot to the back. Think he'll still be there Joe ? He'll be there. Rolling up to the box office we see " closed" . Psst, hey man come here. Give bucks. Let me get my wallet....and then the badge comes out. Pete Tanner takes off with Friday and Gannon in hot pursuit finally catching him at the dipping dots stand.

"Why you running Pete" Man man man, I couldn't take it anymore, all these guys making all this money, and I'm going on what $580 a week. All these guys getting coached up, what did I get....Free throws Pete...free throws Pete. Andy got trained, Alfred did too, what did I get...nothing.

I tell you one thing you got says Joe Friday...a trip downtown

8:47pm so where's the money gone? I'm not I'm not the one who who has the. Money.

Who does!

It's Gertrude and Ethel....the ticket ladies.

At this point Friday grab some by the lapel. What's your cut!

$1 a head, you better not mess with those old ladies it's a secret society they are the ones who really control buzzer beater

Tough to lose this game (after leading at the end of regulation and 1OT) but even a superior roster can't make up for bad coaching. Tried to get too cute playing my backup PG Hastings so I could get Hankins training minutes; saving enthusiasm for the finals (I figured I could beat Deronimo on PON too), and having Nix injured didn't help. Don't understand how Bernadas and Pfeiffer shoot as poorly as they did or why the GE had Anderson in for as many minutes as he played in the overtimes. Good game.

EDIT lol Now that my food finally arrived I sound really hangry...never post on BB on an empty stomach, kids.

Look forward to continuing our rivalry next season, hopefully to a different end. Or hopefully not, if you can make it all the way this season.

Hankins and Hastings look like a either or proposition. And the latter did have a better DMI. And the generals had issues as well. Petersen was way off from the field and had more turnovers than a pastry chef, but he got some boards and SEVEN blocks which was part of the reason I bought him in. My guard play as the kid would say was trash. Thank God for Talkis as he had the game of his life when we needed it most. Great game.

Theives taking down Hayward was a surprise. The brewskies are flat lining, I actually was at Fillmore abode this evening watching our tar heels get whacked by wake (ugly) he was not real surprised, but I sure was.

Now back to our story....

11:49pm, Gannon and I pulled back into the coliseum parking lot which was still abuzz following tonight's result. Coach Lambini was found holding shop with several high end fans at their tailgate party. Detective Gannon and I asked for a moment in private and showed him Pete Tanner in the back of the issued patrol car ofone of one of BBPD's finest.

What's this about, Pete what happened?

It was Gannon who spoke, coach we found on that him in cahoots with your ticket staff letting fans in on the side.

Yeah I could tell something is not right. So Pete was letting them in? And just what were you charging ?

A sawbuck, your letting me go into the poor house for $5, what was your cut?

A BUCK!

Afterwards CL gave Gannon and I the names and addresses of the elderly women who run the booth.

Friday February 14th... 7:07pm

Gannon and I pull into the South's legendary culinary establishment The Waffle House for a brief respite before continuing our pursuit of one Gertrude Higgenbothen and Ethel Persall the managers of the generals ticket office. Since Pete Tanner's confession the other night both had not been seen. I had a grill cheese with bacon, a order scattered and a coffee, Gannon had a BLT and a Coke. "I can't believe I had to cancel my reservation to that Japanese place so we can go chase a couple of retirees around the various bingo halls around town Joe." Just then the door opens and two older women enter the room both matching the description of our suspects sitting in the booth directly behind Friday.

A few moments later Gannon and Friday make their moves. "Generals have a great season this year aren't they Ms Persall" "Oh sweetie it's been a great season in so many ways" "I just wish Pete could get some playing time" says Gannon. " I don't know Bill, word is he gets better paid when he doesn't play" "So why aren't two handsome young men like yourselves out with your girlfriend's or wives on Valentine's?" " We're still working ma'am" says Gannon as both gentlemen rise from the table with Friday throwing a sawbuck on the table for the tip

Oh what sort of what do you boys do?

We're cops as both flash their badges with the camera panning away as the first few notes of the iconic theme plays!

Announcer: on Friday February 14 trial was held in the Superior Court in and for the community of buzzerbeater....in a moment the results of that trial.
