I don't think it's that bad, because he could have just set the starting price higher. If he didn't and he regrets it, he can still set it higher at the risk for buying his own player back with the penalty being the tax.

I have done it once because I decided afterwards that I did not want to sell the player so I bought him back. I lost a small amount of money in the transaction as I was only getting 96ish% of the sale price.

Bidding on your own player might be a smart move though:
Let's assume that someone has a player on the TL with a starting value of 200.000$ and no bids. With no bids at all, this particular player will NEVER show up in your "Manage My Team" page, under the Current Transfers tab (top right corner). In order to have a player there, he must have an active bid. Bidding on an own player will enable him to appear in front of lots of managers.
And paying a normal amount, like 3% tax for a player (6.000$ for this example) is worth the risk.

Interesting thought. But there's another downside to consider, apart from the 3% loss. If you still want to sell him after buying him back, he will have been just transferred so you will only receive 82% of the sale price, as opposed to 97%. So either you would have to take a 15% loss to sell him in the near future or you would have to wait several weeks to get a normal return.

I don't think that it's worth it. By buying back a player you lose the 6000 and then he will only sell for 80 something percent instead of the initial 97%. Have you actually tried this or were you just guessing? Also I don't even look at the manage my team page when looking for players. I search them up on the TL. Maybe other people are different though.

I've done this 1-2 times only because I wanted to keep my players. I didn't notice the tax after this one, you're maybe right about that.
