your match ratings as a team will generally be better when you play against better teams. For individual players i doubt it, or atleast the difference isnt big enough for me to notice.

The ratings are always the same, it doesn't matter.

from my experience.

every season, my highest team ratings have always been against the best teams in the league. and yes I took enthusiasm and effort into account.

Maybe your starters played more minutes but the ratings are the same independently of the opponents.

Do the ratings reflect how well the player did defensively?

I would absolutely love to see statistical evidence for both sides of this debate.

I've been told both stories and really have no idea. To me, it seems logical that the rating would remain the same, otherwise what's the point of having a rating?

the rating is depended on the competition
basically u can think of it as making a proper play on the field - mistakes made
higher competition is much more error prone so the rating should suffer

the easy read is in cup games where high DIV players get a 1-2 higher playing against low DIV,
and low DIV teams see their player rating drops playing higher

Yes, I was going to mention this as well. I think a player will always have similar defensive ratings as how well defense is played is independent of the opponent. However, if a player goes 12-14 shooting with 13 rebounds, those ratings on will be higher than if he shoots 3-14 with 5 rebounds. Therefore, you can generally expect lower ratings against better players/better teams.
