Hmm, perhaps you could attach a certain Color for Commentary for each of your Players?
You might even make it where you can change the Font, within reason.
I know Starters change, especially when trying to get 6 guys through 2 Position Training, but you know your Main Starting 5. So you could select each of these guys to be in Bold, take the Guards and go Red, Forwards Blue and C Black. The rest of your team is still in Regular/Black. You can easily see where the Starters make plays, and if it's G/F/C. Yellow and Green and now you can tell all 5 of the Starters apart just by Color and Bold.
Now you put 3 Trainees in Italics. Same thing, you like your PGs Red, your SGs Yellow, etc.
Just giving 3 Fonts (Bold, Italics, Regular) and a handful of colors and you can Code your entire Squad.
