We went down swinging tonight against a pretty strong Hong Kong team - taking the game to the wire after a seriously disappointing first half. Probably was a bit of a coin flip game in the end, so we were slightly unlucky to lose.

Will do the writeup tomorrow.

Propably needed Lionel Walker, if only he wasnt on the TL.

Australia v Hong Kong

1. Achudanandan Mahurkar was brought into the squad to give commentators nightmares, and add some depth to the bigs after a poor gameshape week. He made his debut early on, and in the first half, he stank. Stank to the tune of 1-9 shooting. Fortunatly, he had a good second half, to have a solid debut game when all was said and done.

2. This game was a story of two halves. In the first, our defense was completely and utterly inept. We let them shoot around 65%. That is not good. Our offense was decent enough, but we still trailed by 22 at half time.

3. A couple of players woke up on offense in the third quarter - in particular Degas scored 9 for the quarter. But it was a better defensive effort that got us back into it, cutting the lead to single digits before a late Hong Kong run disappointingly restored the lead to 15 points in the final quarter.

4. Steve Reimers was massive in the last quarter, scoring 13 points. We had the lead back to within 7 points with a couple of minutes left, and a bucket and a stop would have had us right back in it. Sadly it wasn't to be, and we had to resort to hoping Hong Kong missed their FTs. They didn't.

5. The game was probably lost at the FT line (aside from the pitiful defense in the first). Hong Kong's dominance inside manifested in a bunch of FT chances, which they largely took.

3. Keith Anderson. Probably big Keef's best game of the season - I'd like to see more of this! Scored bunches of points with his array of jumpers, putbacks and post moves, and even snuck in a couple of 3s. Crashed the offensive glass for 6 offensive boards. 4 turnovers are a blemish, but he still deserves the 3 votes.

2. Burl Barth. Its not often a player can get votes when they only play 7 minutes. But when they scored 13 points in those 7 minutes, on perfect shooting, they deserve votes. Why he didn't play more is beyond me.

1. Thad Hadley. The Thad didn't do an awful lot of scoring - managing 8 points. But he facilitated the offense masterfully - 10 assists with no turnovers is a good game in anyone's books.

Honourable mention - Steve Reimers. I can't squeeze him into the votes this week, which I would have liked to, since he hasn't picked up votes yet. But his effort in almost stealing the game in the fourth deserves mention. Now, if only he could do that for the whole game...

Pretty poor defensive effort makes it hard to give votes tonight

3. Scott Schnieder. Centre was probably the one position that didn't really get a hold of us. I'll chalk that down to a good defensive effort from Scotty S, who also lead the team in defensive rebounds, with 6.

2. Brent Degas. Did a decent job on the PGs - although end of game FTs inflate their stats a little. Also managed a decent amount of defensive boards at PG, and got a couple of steals.

1. Emori 'bruiser' Faletoese. Didn't really defend all that well to be honest. But he did injure an opponent less than 3 minutes into the game. I like that in a player. So he gets a vote.

A big game gets Schnieder in reach of Shishaev. Hard to imagine anyone else winning this medal from here, but stranger things have happened.

Shishaev had a poor game - missing out on the opportunity to close the lead. Schnieder closes the gap a bit, but with 6 votes on offer each game, there are still plenty of players who could win this.

Great writeup once again, you still get a +1 but gee I was close to withholding due to my boy Reimers "honourable mention", come on man just give him a vote.

2nd last game of the second stage is tomorrow night, against Korea. A win here will put us in the box seat to go through to the semis.

As a note to all the managers of potential NT players, we still have 2 spots left in the team. I expect that I will fill those spots before the semi final (if we make it). But no player will be added unless they are in proficient gameshape (or I get really desperate), so make sure you keep your players in good shape!

Big win to take a firm hold on 2nd - we are now a game and PD clear with 1 game left.

1. The team got off to a slow start, losing the first quarter by a point. We were struggling to contain their inside game, with their starting bigs combining for 10 points, with only 1 missed shot between them. On our end, the Jackson Mansfield medal leader Shishaev got off to a slow start, going 0-2 in the quarter, while Makurkar lead all scorers in his 2nd NT game.

2. Shishaev's night got worse, as he suffered a hard hit early in the 2nd quarter, and did not return. Betting was suspended on the medals, but Shishaev appeared to be ok after the game. The 2nd quarter was more of the same, as Park had his way with us inside. However, our offense clicked into gear, and we entered the half with a narrow lead.

3. Our offense was sort of alright in the third quarter. Here's some stats: 21-31 from the field. 6 of 8 from beyond the arc. Toss in a couple of made FTs, and what do you get? a 50 point quarter. 50. Not bad. We completely blew the game apart, taking a 29 point lead into the final break. Riemers and Scoggins tossed in 10 points, Deagas had 8, and Faletoese and Walker 7 a piece. Not bad.

4. With the Korean star performer of the night, Park, fouling out early in the 4th, we continued on our merry way with another 41 points, while restricting Korea to 15, to win by 55 points. We won the last half by 50. Faletoese had a big last quarter with 10 points, while Degas caught fire late to get 9 points for the quarter.

5. Where was the game won and lost? Well, we scored 91 points in the last half. That probably will win you most games.

Darby Walters Medal

3. Steve Riemers. Riemers was massive tonight, picking up the slack after Shishaev was injured. He was particularly big in the 3rd quarter, which set the game up for us. But in addition to his 20 points, his playmaking was a highlight all night - ending with 8 assists.

2. Emori Faletoese. Just kept going all night, making 12 of his 17 FG attempts. Also notched up 4 assists from the SF position. Would have been a 3 vote performance in most other games this season.

1. Dylan Scoggins. Big men aren't supposed to go 8-10 in a RnG offense, but big Dylan found a way to get it done tonight. His 4 assists for a PF were also pleasing.

Honourable mention - The whole god damned team. Except Anderson. And Hadley. And Shishaev. But everyone else scored like mad.

3. Scott Schnieder. Did the job on the glass, and kept the opposing centres reasonably quiet given we were facing an inside offense.

2. Steve Riemers. Did the job on the opposing SG, forcing to take 15 shots, of which he only hit 3. Also had a steal, but it would be nice to see him hit the boards.

1. Emori Faletoese. Did a nice job on the defensive boards for a SF, kept the opposing SF quiet, and nabbed a steal as well. Did all he needed to do.

Jackson Mansfield Medal leaderboard

Overall, Scoggins extends his lead in the Darby Walters medal, and Schnieder takes the lead in the Rudolph Radford medal. Shishaev still leads the overall medal, but only just after two voteless weeks. With at most 3 games left, it is probably down to a race in 3 now, barring a massive last few games from some players.
