I had a lot of problems with my coach subbing out trainees last season during big blowouts.
The only way I got around it was to ensure that any player set as a backup, was also set as the reserve for that position. The trainee of course was set at all three slots for his position. That's worked for me in every game, unless there's an injury or a foul out. In that case, all bets are off.
