Not on a free throw. An air ball on a free throw is a violation of some sort, and the play is dead.

We know what an "air ball" means. I went and looked at that game, and at 2:03 (/BBWeb/reportmatch.aspx?matchid=8465276&realTim...) the player "throws up a brick" for the second FT and got his own rebound. My language is set as "English (US)". I have never ever seen an "air ball" message myself in BB.

Go to your profile: (/BBWeb/profile.aspx). What exactly is your Default Language set as?

Answering myself, because I think I'm wrong. According to any NBA rules I looked at (this looks like it covers the violations: (http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_10.html?nav=ArticleList)), I don't think the FT air ball itself is a violation. But any time I've seen this in an NBA game, there's an immediate whistle.

So, I think, in practice, there is always a whistle (and never a rebound) on an NBA FT air ball, because:

- the shooter is quickly in violation because they cross the plane of the free throw line before the free throw touches anything; and/or
- a FT air ball usually hits out of bounds?

This is all tangential to the original post, which I'm still convinced is the result of an LA issue.

No, you were right. From the page you linked, rule a says
a. After the ball is placed at the disposal of a free throw shooter, his attempt shall be within 10 seconds in such a way that the ball enters the basket or touches the ring before it is touched by a player. The shooter shall be within that part of the free throw circle behind the free throw line.
Then the penalties:
PENALTY:
(1) In (a-f) above, if the violation is by the offense, no point can be scored. The ball is awarded out-of-bounds to the opposing team at the free throw line extended.

So, if the FT shooter doesn't put the ball in the basket or touch the rim, then it's a violation and the other team gets the ball out-of-bounds.

That's what I'm guessing.


Even more guessing... since he's referring to the normal text, it's probably an English text. I've never seen an "air ball" message myself, using English (US), and I've been around here a while. So that would leave English (UK).

Juice, do you have the ability to check the English (UK) translations?

Screw it, I just did the work. English (UK) shows that event the same way. Deutsch shows it as "Airball von (player)...". So it's too much flavor in the German translation. Simple.

Edit: In case whoever eventually retranslates this looks, a "brick" is not an air ball. It's a very poor shot, usually meaning one with a little too much power and a low trajectory.

Mike just let me know that as well, and that's also the only instance of "airball" appearing in the translations.
