Spiders - one other financial item you should check on - staff salaries. They go up each week for each staff member, and if you forget to check on them every once in a while, you may be spending a lot more money than you need to.
Case in point, my kitties at the beginning of this season. I had bought all new staff about two seasons ago, and was losing money at the start of this season. Realize the guy that I had picked up at $14k a week (or whatever it was) had now basically doubled his salary. Fired the lot of them, bought new guys (of same ability level, but lower salaries) saving myself approx $30k a week.

Check to see if you are spending more than you need to.

Ya, I figured it might occur in a bad way. I wanted to see what effect it would have on my players since I've never actually played that tactic.....man, that was brutal! LOL

Thanks everyone for the help (and for the song). It's obvious what I have to do, now that relegation is unavoidable. Go back to d4, and become a money making machine, then worry about the X's and O's when I have the bank to do it. I guess what this means is that I won the championship in my division last season with a team that had no business winning it. I'll be honest. I have issues with the game engine, and this season almost convinced me to walk away. But, like I said, I'll explore the financial strategy aspect of the game, and give it one more chance.

Do not be so hard on yourself. Your team probably had every right to win last season. The thing to remember is, D3 is filled with teams who previously won their D4 leagues. This is my third trip to D3 and it is the first time that I have had any success. The first time I came to D3, I was certain that D3 would only be a temporary stopping point on my inevitable rise to D2. As it turned out, I had a woefully unprepared roster, a poor understanding of finances, and an underwhelming arena.

When I came to D3 a second time, I knew it would be short-lived so I used the time to develop my players and grab a high potential trainee. The point is, if you look at this promotion to D3 as a scouting trip, learn what you need, and prepare, you will have a better chance of sticking around the next time you rise this high.

You seem to have a firm foundation now on which to build, thanks to the lessons you learned yourself and the advice you got from others. I am sure that you will return to the D3 ranks in no time. Relegation is no reason to lose hope. Just keep at it and you will do fine. Keep trimming that roster of unnecessary fat and you will be well on your way. Best of luck to ya.

Though I would like to ad an addendum about staying up. I have always stayed up, 12 seasons here and seasons 20-28 in d3.9 and it has been because I have always used a blueprint with a certain burgundy and gold hue to it.

Thanks for the advice and the link. I watched the whole movie, not because I needed inspiration for rebuilding this team, but because it's about one of my all time favorite sports teams. "Little Joe" and "The Diesel" are two of my favorite athletes. Still, they do need to change their name, but I'll spare you that rant for now. Anyhow, I will take what I've learned about D3 and bring it with me to D4. I'll rebuild, and I will be back when I am ready, unless I promote by accident or find even more issues with this game. Speaking of that, I'm still trying to wrap my head around how you people all have only about 12 guys on your team. I know, that's what the NBA does, but I'm pretty sure that players in the NBA are capable or starting more than 2 out of every 3 games. Also, there is the problem of training players. If you want to train a player correctly, you have to start him at 2 or 3 different positions during the season. How do you get around both of these problems and still have enough starters to win?

I think that's the first time I haven't had an all-star since demoting. And that's a long time...

You should be able to get back up pretty quick, d4 has turned into a waste land so unless you get stuck in a league of death where three or four teams all have the ability to come back up I think you will be alright.

I think the key with trainees is to use them off the bench for league games then play them only in the scrimmages. The conventional wisdom is to try and have everyone play 48-72 minutes per week with in my view the ideal being around 64. Yes some starters can end up logging around 80 and you can let someone get around 90 for the week without destroying GS. As for players needing to play multiple positions to train properly I can make a case for and against that. If you want a player where his main skills are accentuated then you do not want to train out of their natural position. But if you want a well rounded player without huge holes in their game then yeah you want to spend some time training out of their natural position. Personally I take a free range approach where training minutes and training focus sometimes just depends on how that week is playing out.

Glad you enjoyed that SKINS goodness. It was such a proud franchise, I grew up on them. Here in NC Before the Panthers the skins were what you got. If you go to eastern NC its still very much Redskins country. Now by Little Joe do you mean Joe Washington or Joe Theismann? The former while still a great contributor had his better days with the Colts. The latter was in my book the most unappreciated QB of his generation. Riggo was well....Riggo (loosen up Sandy baby), the fun bunch, Art Monk, Dexter Manley, Darell Green, Dave Butz ("Butz for Utz, still my chip of choice because of those radio commercials) Sonny Sam and Frank on the radio call ( turn down the sound turn up the radio except MAYBE if Madden was doing the game). Those were the days my friend we thought they'd never end. But Gibbs retired to do Nascar, old man Cooke died, that scumbucket got the team,and now were a national punchline. Much as I know they need to change the name a piece of me will die the day they do and unless they can come up with something catchy or poignant I will no longer have a NFL team I can call my own or i will just have to give my allegiance to the soulless panthers. As for this season I come in with zero confidence, 4-12 is a distinct possibility with about six of those being games they will piss away and like many old time fans I want these tough times to continue in the hopes that horrible man who owns this franchise will decide he no longer wishes to do so. #HTTR (sigh)

In terms of only 12 or so players per team, check out some of the top teams in this league in terms their starting line-ups for league games, who their backups are in those game, and what type of line-up they run out in meaningless scrimmages once out of the cup.

In terms of playing a trainee at different position during the season - here is one tip. A player can only be trained for 48 minutes max each week. So, if there is 1 game in a particular week that will be either a guaranteed win, even if that player is played out of position - OR - will be a guaranteed loss even if that player is played in his proper position and you crunch-time the game as well, then those are the perfect games in which to play him out of position. You were going to win anyway, or lose anyway, so might as well get some long term training benefit out of the week - in addition to the guaranteed win/loss.
