Most of the EPL clubs are so far in debt, you can be pretty sure that at least one or two of them will see the same fate as Leeds. Portsmouth is already bankrupt, and both Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea have huge debts :

A report by UK newspaper The Guardian claims that the debt owed by the 20 English Premier League clubs amounts to £3.1 billion.

The Guardian reports that accounts for the clubs, mostly documenting the year to May, June or July 2008, show that FA chairman Lord Triesman underestimated the level of debt in English football, which he put at £3 billion in total last October, including the Football League clubs and the FA.

Manchester United and Chelsea lead the debtor’s table, owing £699 million and £701 million respectively. Arsenal were third with £416 million in debts. Liverpool owe around £280 million.


The Guardian's paper was from 09. Top clubs in Italy and Spain aren't in a much better financial shape. Leeds led the way but there could be other similar stories in the years to come.

As to why soccer will never be a major pro sport in the US, someone mentioned that a soccer game isn't formated like other pro sports there, that's the main reason. Now, do we have to conclude that americans have shorter attention spans than the rest of the world ? Nah, I wouldn't dare to suggest that

Just to clarify, soccer doesn't need to surpass any of the top 4 or 5 (Baseball, Basketball, Football, Hockey..Nascar?) to afford to support rosters that cost on par with the stronger european leagues. All MLS needs to do is continue their slow but steady model and win over the already existing soccer fans in the country. I don't care what it takes for MLS to be considered "major" in the US market, as the competition for players is global. Patience, the top 4 in the US weren't in great financial shape at year 15 either.

Now, do we have to conclude that americans have shorter attention spans than the rest of the world ?

MLS have a ridicoulous CBA with the players with a too low salary cup to attract the kids playing sovver instead any of the other sports in america(not only the big 4),and to buy some good player not at the end of the career
MLS teams lose against the teams of their continent,who aren't exactlly the top in the world(only the mexicans teams are of a competitive level,and they plays with the southamerican teams form many many many many years)

It's the CBA and strict salary cap that allowed the league to survive the first 10 years. It's much more stable now and teams apparently aren't bleeding money anymore, mostly due to securing their own stadiums and all the revenue streams that come along with them. MLS is expanding every season and the fees to buy a team have gone up in multiples over the years. The owners will loosen their purse-strings over time, but these billionaires don't become so wealthy by giving their money away and making bad business choices. They know what their doing and have positioned themselves very well to not only survive, but grow over the last couple years during the brutal financial environment.

I can only give an example from my country, where soccer is as important, if not more, than health care reform. It moves millions (people and money) and Portugal completely stops to watch soccer, lower divisions or not.

On the other hand, basketball is completely underrated. It was more important 10 years ago than now, because we had a stable league and foreign players (mostly American) put on a show that would atract people. Also, NFL and NHL are completely overlooked which is sad, because I'm a huge NFL fan.

I think its just a matter of understanding how the game is played, and since soccer is the simplest, therefore the most successful.

I dont know wether american billionaires care about, but soccer has a big problem nowadays:

If you buy one team, you will lose more money than you will win. Thats 100% for sure, investing in players, paying them good salarys etc, i dont know if the american billionaires will see atractive to buy and invest on good soccer teams.

Just an example, how Liverpool lose money season after season and every season there are rumours of selling their best players.

I think this is a good trend. Due to these massive losses, we are slowly going back to the youth academy's being the centre of the soccer clubs again. Which means Holland can finally return to the top of the world in soccer.

The reason why we lost the race is because of the money. A few decades ago Ajax was still able to keep their great players and win champions leagues and european cups. Now every talent is sold to a big club offering millions of extra salary per year. There is no way we can keep them.

Just imagine the great team Ajax would have if they could keep those players. Sneijder, Van der Vaart, Van der Sar, Bergkamp, Babel, Huntelaar, Seedorf etc etc. We could surely build a Champions League winning team then!
