I look at GS as the player's overall physical, mental, even spiritual shape for the week.
Even in real life, a coach or GM can do as much as they possibly can do for the team, and still some things can be "off" with a player.
Maybe the player caught a bit of a cold. Maybe the player had an uncle pass away. Maybe the player is suffering from a sudden lack of confidence.
The player isn't injured, but is not at 100% playing capability. It is just a game, and while randomness can be crushing (ie. affecting game outcomes, promotion, etc), it is definitely not boring and it forces you to come up with a different plan or course of action through some creativity.
