I wish to improve his guard skills, hopefully awful/inept will become average/respectable by the end of next season:

I really think it's too late to train him in secondary skills now, especially since they are pretty bad. If I did want to train him though, I think I would try giving him passing only. Passing should be somewhat faster then other skills, OD and JR.
