I have fun discussing these kinds of things. Two part question so I’ll answer both.

How can I afford the salaries - I’m currently losing 100k with some overextension tax each week. Once my guy sells Monday that helps get me down a decent bit but still negative each week. Part of my buying this player was it should position me as the favorite for my BBM group which IF I win that the above deficits gets made up for between now and the end of the season.

How do I afford to buy these players - if you look at my team history I either promote or demote every season. Through that strategy since I took over this squad coming into this season I was sitting on $10MM. After buying this guy I’m at 7.3ish left in the bank. So money isn’t too much of an issue for me. My goal though is to go up and win the NBBA so I don’t want to be TOO loose with it on the way back.

Last note here I’ve been watching the market for a player like this for awhile and there aren’t too many. The ones I have found typically are between 120-140k in salary and never get listed for <$2MM. I reached out to the manager and told him I’d snap bid if he listed for $1.5MM. Was looking great at the number until a D IV team got into a bidding war with me. So between price I got him for, salary for how balanced dude is, and BBM tourney economics helping offset losses I pulled the trigger now.

Update to this and something I hadn't FULLY considered with this move. The Merch bump due to Saxby being and getting a few minutes with his national team helped offset even more than I anticipated. I also didn't anticipate Ziggy going for what he did. All good things!

Somebody from my team won the 3 point contest! Oh man you all need to start worrying. That's some sign of the apocalypse kind of stuff there.

I'm just happy Armstead had a good All Star appearance. He traditionally hides beneath the basket and comes out with a statline of 3-8 7 rebs and 7 points.

Somehow, I am not surprised. LAB is usually the one I focus on slowing down in our battles.

Pio walked into the GM’s office with his assistants in tow. Everyone wondered why this meeting was called, but no one spoke a word at all. The GM sat at his desk with his back turned to the door, hidden by his oversized chair. That pinged Pio’s radar. This isn’t a normal meeting, he thought to himself. He looked at Marshall and Byron, who were on the same page as their former teammate. Something was off.

Coach turned towards the coaching staff. “Hey, I’m just the consultant, but no one was here, the door was open, and the chair invited me to sit in it.” After greeting his former players and politely welcoming Air Allnite, Coach spoke to assembled staff.

“I was asked to talk to you because some feelings might be sore. I know Pio is pissed. He’s just had his interior offense, defense and rebounding ripped apart for the second season in a row. I’d be pissed, too. Air, you got new point guards to work with. Make it happen; you wouldn’t have them if the organization didn’t believe you were up to it.” Immediately, the entire staff knew something was up, but unsure of what exactly.

Coach noted this, and continued.

“Marshall, the organization thinks the parts we need are already here. Whatever they hand you, work to the player’s strengths. You’ll do fine. Byron, I see you got new toys. I think you’ll know what to do with them.” Coach patted Byron on the shoulder. He really was sure Byron would know what to do.

“Gentlemen, you’ll go ahead and open the folders in front of you.” Each folder was opened to a detailed, assignment specific scouting report. Air had the report on the guards, Marshall the wings, and Byron the bigs, while Pio had the report for each player on the roster. Each man took note of the handwritten note included.

“Gentlemen, if you need advice, you know how to reach me. My last act before full time retirement is to introduce your new GM. The previous guy got a promotion and is the new president of basketball operations.”

Into the room walked Roberto Gurgone. His former teammates were excited. Air Allnite was not a former teammate.

“Does this team ever bring in someone with a differing view”, he asked.

“You still have a job here, don’t you” Roberto retorted. Roberto wasn’t trying to make a new friend. “I want to hear what the plans are for the rest of this season. Air, speak your mind. Tell me what plans you have for the guards.”

“We have to increase the range on Cerri’s shot---” Air started, but Roberto had no time for canned responses and cut him off.

“If you can’t speak your mind right here and right now, then you’re the wrong one for the job.” One look at Air’s face told the story; Roberto had made his point.

“Cerri and Farley should battle for the job for the rest of the season and into next season. We need to push McCain and Donny a bit to see how they respond. I don’t think McCain is a point guard, but I don’t know that he isn’t. That’s a problem. We need to find more out about Donny, too. Coffey and Tovar have to step things up defensively. Petriukstis, we need to find a way to light his fire on offense. I want focus on outside defense for at least 2 of these remaining weeks of the season.” Air said his piece and expected the worst.

Roberto calmly replied. “I’ll give you one week. The results determine if you get another week. Marshall, you’re up.”

Marshal was ready. “I can help with Mantas. I want to see him Reybolds and Sokmen attack the rim more. Give me Hatfield and we can work on his shot. He can handle the wing defensively.”

Byron Helm jumped up at that. “Me and the bigs have work to do on our inside defense and rebounding. Inside scoring could be better also. Then there’s the shot blocking.”

“Roberto, we’re going outside defense this week. We go bigs next week. We'll see how that goes and go from there."

You can look at their arena page and kind of do the math.

Last home game they made a little over $240k. They have player salaries of about 480k and I'm sure they have at least decent staff because they are training a potential future NT player. But if you look at their team history they have been around for a long time. They have a high surplus of transfer money (net positive of nearly 6 million) plus promotion and win money from BBM and promoting last season. So while they are most likely losing money each week, they can afford it because they are going to promote to D2 and will upgrade their roster a bit in hopes of going to NBBA.

BB is more of an economy game than a basketball strategy game and they've been building up over a long period of time to spend money to promote at the right time. That's how a lot of the best franchises have done it historically.

As for the older players, a lot of them probably just have sentimental value to him. You'll see some teams do that and then also some times go buy really old former NT players, etc. just to hold onto them. Doesn't really impact much since they are all under 1k in salary.

Edit: was just dropping by because southpaw was in my league last season and was seeing how they were doing. They address a lot of this up higher in the thread that I just saw.
