Depends on the goal of the team. Either tank and train 3 players in 1 position and then rebuild next season. Or spend the next week or so looking for bargains on the transfer list and building a great team and promote this season.

I believe it's bigger than looking, promoting and building "just another great team".

You keep saying everyone is playing the same game so no one is disadvantaged. But I am only saying it's not funny. It's that simple really. It's not about the game is fair to everyone or not.

You can use draconian measures to smooth out the price curves but to what end?

I think that's what I was trying to say but you said it much better (free agents = draconian measure). Although, my feeling says you were not trying to argue my point. I think there was a time for this draconian measure but its time is coming to an end.

We do not exist in a free market at the moment. The market will not be "free" until free agents are gone.

Note that I am not advocating a complete elimination of free agents, at least not yet. I am quite sure if that happened we would see the same thing as last time: spiraling out of control prices. But at the very least the flow needs to start to ebb.

The current free agent mechanism is based on salary. Why not keep that but then also introduce a random factor whereby x% of players who would normally become free agents retire instead? That would still keep a good distribution between good and fantastic players but at the same time reduce their supply on the market.
