Starting from Season 56, Lahti Basketball will be known as Bay City Pirates. The legendary Pirate Logo - created by the great mkapa - remains the same, and the team colours will be the familiar black and white.
The name change marks the beginning of a new era for the team that has fell from being a championship contender to Div. III. In the following seasons, the team led by young rising stars like Jaakko Taiminen and Jaakko Parttimaa will aim at returning to the top.
”Our target is to compete at the highest international level. The new name represents this ambition. Lahti has for decades been globally known as the Bay City. The name also refers to the pirate culture of our city - as well as to our playing style”, comments the owner, Dr. Renatus Cartesius, his decision to change the team name.
”Besides, we are really pissed off that people around the world cannot write or pronounce our name correctly. Lahti usually turns into Lathi, and even Finns misspell it using horrible versions Lahi or Lahe. The Bay is much easier”, continues Dr. Cartesius.
There has also been rumors about the confusion between the team and another team with the same name, playing basketball in a parallel universe. However, this claim has not been confirmed. ”We have no conflicts with any universe”, says Dr. Cartesius.
