A Farewell to a Legend

Retirement of Kosmas Mitropanos

The time has come for us to say goodbye to a true pillar of this club—a captain and leader, but also our brother, Kosmas Mitropanos (45509395). Tonight, as we celebrate a thrilling home game, we also celebrate the close of a chapter that spans decades. Kosmas is more than just a player—he is the embodiment of the values and spirit that have defined the LuNey_ToOnS since its very inception.

A name etched in the club’s legacy with 447 appearances, Kosmas stands proudly as the second-most capped player in our history, a number only surpassed by his longtime teammate and friend Yiannis (46709175). But Kosmas’ contribution goes far beyond statistics. His presence on the court, his leadership in the locker room, and his endless drive to push this team to greatness are what have made him irreplaceable.

Kosmas’ 6,315 points place him second on the all-time scoring list, and his unparalleled 4,257 rebounds—a club record that may never be touched—cement his status as the club’s finest rebounder. But ask anyone about Kosmas, and they won’t talk about the points or the rebounds. They’ll talk about the man—the captain who guided this team with kindness and sportsmanship, the leader who picked us up when we were down, and the player who gave everything for the LuNey_ToOnS crest, season after season.

After Koroneos hung up his jersey, it was Kosmas who took the mantle of captain and continued a tradition of excellence that this club has always cherished. His leadership propelled us to the top division, where we had some of our greatest years—battling, growing, and living unforgettable experiences together. His return last season, after a brief departure, was the storybook ending we all hoped for—a legend coming home to finish his journey where it all began.

Speaking after the game, a visibly emotional Kosmas shared his thoughts on this bittersweet moment:

"This club means everything to me. From the moment I first wore the jersey as an 18-year-old kid, trying to find my way into the locker room, I knew I was home. I’ve been lucky to share this journey with incredible teammates, fans, and the staff—especially under the guidance of Bobos and the ever-watchful eye of Granny. Tonight isn’t just a farewell. It’s a celebration of all we’ve achieved together. I may be stepping off the court, but LuNey_ToOnS will always be my family."

Bobos, the club’s longtime manager, echoed the sentiments of the night:

"Kosmas has been the heart of this team for as long as I can remember. His dedication, both on and off the court, is unmatched. He’s not just a great player—he’s a great person. His presence will be missed, but his legacy will inspire generations of LuNey players to come. And let’s not forget, Granny is already planning her cookies for the post-game tea!"

The entire LuNey_ToOnS community feels the weight of this moment. From Granny’s kitchen, where Kosmas has been a regular guest for her famous Sunday dinners, to the fans who have filled the stadium season after season, there’s not a soul who won’t feel his absence. Uncle Ekber, a retro figure within the club, was even spotted in the crowd tonight, nodding approvingly as Kosmas’ jersey number 7 will soon hang in the rafters.

For over two decades, Kosmas has shown us what it means to be a true professional. Through the ups and downs, the victories and the defeats, his loyalty has never wavered. He helped raise the bar for this franchise and will forever be remembered as one of the all-time greats to wear the LuNey jersey.

Tonight’s victory isn’t just for us—it’s for Kosmas Mitropanos, our captain, our leader, and forever, a legend.

Thank you, Kosmas, for the memories, the moments, and the magic. Lu
