Week One Part One

Welcome to another season of the Fishbowl. THere were some great games in the first round but to read about the greatest of all you will have to look at the West.

Glenelg Tigers vs. CROCKERS 104 - 65

Pick number three in the draft Glenelg Tigers didn't disappoint the Guppies having probably the best performance in the East this week. CROCKERS have been focussing mainly on their youth and do have some GS issues at the moment to excuse their poor performance but the reality is Glenelg Tigers will be a force in the East this season and maybe will be pushing for the coveted second place we are all fighting for. There are four very worthy candidates for MVP this week and Chinh Tôn will just miss out.

3 Fan Chung Ling Glenelg Tigers 22 PTS 17 REB 4 AST 14.0 rating. Fan stuffed the stat sheet but it was stuffing his opposing PF into scoring just 4 points in 48 minutes that had the judges impressed the most.

2 Bernabé da Gudiña Glenelg Tigers 17 PTS 14 REB 14.0 rating. Slightly less stats than Fan but they were achieved in just 31 minutes abd at a very efficient 8/11 scoring rate.

1 Rod McPhail CROCKERS 41 PTS 12.0 rating. McPhail will be a MVP candidate this season for certain but when your team is flogged by 40 it is hard to rank much higher especially when you miss 32 shots in a game.

0 Chinh Tôn Glenelg Tigers We are used to great guards called Ton in this league and he will feel hard done by missing out with his 26 points being a top score for the Tigers but this match was won inside. Next time.

Melbourne Goldfish vs. Billy Hoyles Boys 74 - 93

This was the first challenge between Season Five Champions Billy Hoyles Boys and one of the teams that is fighting for second. Both teams came into the match with some GS issues and the Goldfish who only have three big men had one out injured meaning their bigs had to play 48 minutes each and not foul out, something they couldn't do in their league SF which may have cost them a trip to the Finals. Both teams chose to go outside as it was a clash of two of the premier SGs in the league however this game left no doubt in the minds of the crowd as Mikey Bergman stepped up while Xie Guanzheng stepped out.

3 Mikey Bergman Billy Hoyles Boys 29 PTS 5 REB 4 AST 17.5 rating. Not only an awesome offensive effort but completly shut down Bay and Karahan who the Goldfish had surprisingly run at SG while giving Xie a try at PG. Was this just the first outing for the East's MVP?

2 Arcangelo Di Nunno Melbourne Goldfish 22 PTS 17 REB. ABBL powerhouse vs struggling division II team, you would expect a 50 point thrashing right? Well it wasn't mainly due to the efforts of Angel, who despite facing ABBL standard opponents managed to hit 10 of his 18 shots (his fellow big "The Don" managed just 1/12) and create his own offence grabbing 7 offensive rebounds (from some of the ugly airballs and bricks Xie was chucking which Xie later claimed were actually passes).

1 Mark Edwards Billy Hoyles Boys 10 AST. Perhaps a surprising choice for the one point but he was the one that gave Mikey the ball and more importantly this oh-so-close-to-U21 player was the one who shut down Xie and thereby shut down the Goldfish.

Week One Part Two

Chelsea Seagulls vs. Chumunga 120 - 79

I would like to say this result refelcts brilliant strategy and coaching by the Seagulls but the fact is Chumunga still hasn't got a team and really this game was going to be the Sultanator and the two trainees against an entire team, however one of the trainees was injured early. Game over.

3 Oliver Ðuričko Chelsea Seagulls 25 PTS 12.5 rating. I was just saying "Ducky" needs a little pore "props" in this league and so he comes right out and earns some with this excellent performance. He would have scored a lot more but he sat out the entire 4th after the game was already far out of reach.

2 Selçuk Sultan Chumunga 30 PTS 26 REB 13.5 rating. Probably good enough for MVP in almost any game that wasn't suck a one sided flogging. He will be certain to be a MVP leader this season if Chumunga chooses to have a competetive team.

1 Jared Sherwin Chelsea Seagulls 18 PTS 15 REB 7 BLK 14.5 rating. Jared did it all and the 7 blocks were just nasty as one hapless watermelon after the other was smashed into pieces. Could have a triple double but also sat out the 4th.

Match of the Round

JW City Bulls vs. Western Titans 107 - 108

It was a contrast in styles as JW ran and gunned while the Titans pounded it inside to Udi and the other Titanic big men. Bit at the end of the game it was the two big men who would decide this match: Liang Wai Yuen vs Udi Samdup.

Here is the last 30 seconds.

4 0:29 103 — 104 Foul called on U. Samdup (H).
4 0:29 104 — 104 L. Wai Yuen (A) sinks the free throw.
4 0:29 105 — 104 L. Wai Yuen (A)'s free throw attempt is up and good.
4 0:15 105 — 106 H. Hengquan (H) pulls up at the top of the key and takes a shot, guarded closely by J. Corica (A). Scored.
4 0:08 107 — 106 L. Wai Yuen (A) tries a driving layup. Scored.
4 0:08 107 — 106 L. Wai Yuen (A) is on fire! that's 5 in a row!
4 0:00 107 — 108 K. Shavgulidze (H) gets off a great pass to U. Samdup (H). U. Samdup (H) throws down a powerful two-handed dunk. Scored.
4 0:00 107 — 108 A buzzerbeater for U. Samdup (H)!
4 0:00 107 — 108 End of period.

So Yuen did everything he could but in the end Udi had the last word.

3 Udi Samdup Western Titans 29 PTS 14 REB 14.0 rating and the game winner.

2 Liang Wai Yuen JW City Bulls 26 PTS 14 REB 13.5 rating. Did all that he could but just fell one point short.

1 Norbert Carey Western Titans 19 PTS 8 REB 3 AST 14.0 rating. Nice stats including a fantastic 8/9 FGs, but even more impressive they were achieved in just 18 minutes.

Week One Part Three

Haggards vs. Slam ! 113 - 99

Looking at the way Slam ! played this match it was like the Naker Virus was still with us. Five guys all playing 48+ minutes, the only difference was only one was 31 or older. Slam ! loves expensive big men and look out for $172K C Gerard Carson later in the season, once he is in shape he will be a dominator. Interesting that both teams went with the supersafe push the ball/man to man. Slam ! actually won 2 of the 4 quarters but the 3rd was an ugly 33-13 rout.

3 Alejandro Ascariz Slam ! 38 PTS 22 REB 5 AST 8 O-REB were all team highs and only the assists were bettered by anyone in the match. Outstanding effort by a $30K player while his $170K team-mate stood around and watched. Without him this game is a slaughter.

2 Pero Mayhew Haggards 20 PTS 12 REB 5 AST. Solid all around performance mainly marred by his man going off for 38 points.

1 Leigham Phillips Haggards 20 PTS 8 REB. Season 8 draft pick and homegrown player made the most of his opportunities pouring on his equal high team score in just 28 minutes.

Northcote Slammers vs. Da Fat Boy Slim 90 - 84

This is probably another example of what C-Cat and Iwen were worries about, a team in top condition playing a finasl series taking down a more fancied opponent who is lazing around getting fat in the offseason. Both teams played a very short bench with 7 players having 47 or more minutes. Da Fat Boy Slim had the chance to win this but missed 12 free throws in this 6 point loss and went 0-8 from three point land.Kye Duffil did all he could to win this one but his supporting cast especially Fu Haoshan (0/10 FGs 4 PTS in 48 minutes) let him down.

3 Kye Duffill Da Fat Boy Slim 34 PTS 21 REB 16.5 rating. I love making work for C-Cat so I am again going to give the MVP to a player from the losing team in a close game. In this match it was Duffman or it was nothing, he was miles above the second best performer.

2 Malcom Doherty Northcote Slammers 22 PTS. Top scorer for the Slammers but not even close to Duffman, however the humiliation he influcted on the hapless Fu Haoshan was simply cruel.

1 Pier Giorgio Masetti Northcote Slammers 20 PTS 19 REB. The stats look great, the mauling Duffman gave him didn't.

Week 2 Part 1

Chelsea Seagulls vs. CROCKERS 120 - 59 (36141683)

Week 2 of season 5 kicked off with a Guppy v Calamari clash featuring a rapidly improving Seagulls outfit versus the rebuilding Crockers without injured star Mcphail...This one was never close with Crockers playing his patient tactics to try and limit the damage versus the Seagulls fast paced offence to cause the most possible damage to the scoreboard! To the votes...

3. M. Hongyun (Chelsea Seagulls) - "Mu mu" as his bevy of fans call him was MVP of this game from the SF position. He shot 20 points on 7-16 and collected 6 reb and 6 assists to show at just 21 he is a star of the future in this fishbowl competition.

2. K. Masters (Chelsea Seagulls) - Kent was the master of this blowout in his 30min played at SG. He shot 25 points (8-12), had 3 reb, 2 assists and a steal and would have recorded better stats if his team required him longer.

1. J. Sherwin (Chelsea Seagulls) - The Sherwinator put in a solid performance against arguably crockers best player Stulpins at the C position. With great scoring efficiency of 60% Sherwin hit 9 points, collected 13 boards, dished 2 assists, raked in 2 steals and corraled a block.

Northcote Slammers vs. Melbourne Goldfish 100 - 115 (36141679)

In one of the more high quality battles in the East this round we had the contrasting styles of the Goldfish (outside orientated) vs the Slammers (allround skilled). In the media this game was billed as an individual battle between to perennial votegetter Xie and Polglase. Xie won out this time.

3. X. Guanzheng (Melb Goldfish) - Xie wins the battle and the 3 votes here. Clearly he was his teams focal point non offence taking 37 attempts for 17 makes to finish with 39 points. He also had a handy 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks.

2. A. Di Nunno (Melb Goldfish) - Di Nunno was a hero of sorts in this game matched up on Polglase and marginally winning the battle of the 2 bigmen. He had a total of 19 points on 7-10 shooting whilst collecting 8 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks whilst playing on the oppositions best player. Very impressive.

1. D. Polglase (Northcote Slammers) - Although he had his colours lowered on the night, Polglase was his teams best with 24 points and 20 rebounds in his 42mins before fouling out.

Week 2 Part 2

JW City Bulls vs. Billy Hoyles Boys 86 - 102 (36141680)

This game was a battle between raging favourite for the East title the BHB versus the up and coming J Dubs. In what was an entertaining game most probably BHB experience and better allround defence won the game but JW earns a lot of respect for their performance...

3. G. Lucia (Billy Hoyles Boys) - Gia had a big double double for the BHB in this game at PF. He hit 22 points while collecting 18 important rebounds to limit JW's second chance opportunities.

2. J. Kent (JW City Bulls) - JW's best was PG Kent. He won the battle against BHB PG and in the process hit 23 points while dishing out 5 assists with only 1 TO versus an abbl opponent.

1. M. Chongzheng (Billy Hoyles Boys) - The chinaman lifted his game to another level this week in recognition of Yao Ming retiring and threw his hat into the ring as a player to lift his nations hopes. Mai had 17 points, 6 reb, 5 assists, 3 steals and a block in an allround performance.

Haggards vs. Western Titans 102 - 89 (36141682)

Western titans came into week 2 of the PL looking for a perfect 2-0 start after being dissapointingly bundled out of their div2 finals recently after having the best league record in the regular season. Unfortunately for them this was not a happy day playing against a very solid Haggards lineup.

3. T. Salgueiro (Haggards) - Tome takes the 3 votes from this game over his running mate Harvey thanks to looking after the ball a lot better (Harvey had 5TO). Tome hit 11-19 shots for his 30 points whilst grabbing 17 boards and swatting 2 blocks.

2. L. Harvey (Haggards) - Harvey as previously mentioned killed his chances for 3 votes with his 5TO however he still had a fabulous game in other areas statistically. He shot 12-19 for his 24 points whilst getting 16 boards and 2 blocks in an inside domination by the Haggards. This brought back memories of Chumungas inside based team and a tear to the eye of this MVP writer.

1. B. Filho (Western Titans) - Filho the "Pastryman" gets recognition for his tireless performance against Haggards 2 inside beast from this reporter marginally pipping the titans PG for votes. Filho hit 17 points on 8-15 whilst collecting 12 reb and 3 steals.

Week 2 Part 3

Chumunga vs. Slam ! 78 - 101 (36141684)

In what is going to routinely be classed as the bye game each round Slam fronted up against the slowly rebuilding and out of their depth Chumunga and did just what was expected of them.

3. A. Ascariz (Slam) - Ascariz channelled his inner Kevin Love in this game for a massive double double of 24 points and 31 rebounds. Impressively for a bigman he also shot 8-8 FT.

2. R. Zacaroli (Slam) - The young aussie PG beat up on his younger counterpart with a rare PG double double consisting of 20 points and 10 assists. He also abused Chumunga's players defensively with 3 blocks.

1. S. Sultan (Chumunga) - In what will be rare votes for Chumunga this season, the Sultanator cracked into the top 3 with a tireless performance. He bullied his way to 29 points on 14-21 shooting whilst also collecting 29 rebounds to keep him in the lead for the East rebounding title.

Glenelg Tigers vs. Da Fat Boy Slim 89 - 77 (36141681)

On paper this was probably the matchup of the round out East with the newly drafted guppy recruit the Glenelg Tigers taking on one of last seasons power teams of the East DFBS. The tigers however showed they are legit in this league and proved that Duffman may have met his cryptonite.

3. B. da Gudiña (Glenelg Tigers) - The tigers bigman was MVP with a stunning game of 40 points and 18 rebounds to show he may be battling for top honours in the East MVP race.

2. K. Duffill (DFBS) - Duffman was the best on court for DFBS hitting 22 points, 9 rebs and 3 assists.

1. C. Tôn (Glenelg Tigers) - In what could have been a massive trip dub by 10 he fell just short and slid down the rankings in this game due to his shooting. He shot 8 points on 4-12 while collecting 10 reb and 10 assists.

While Smeltz may be struggling in the West, Duffman has lept to an early lead in the East. No surprise that it is one of the Goldfish trailing him closely, however what is a surprise is that it is Arcangelo Di Ninno in second. There are a huge pile of players in third and we will need a few more weeks for some more clear front runners such as Udi Samdup or Mikey Bergman to emerge.

Week Three Part One (Not Naker Style)

Glenelg Tigers vs. Northcote Slammers 69 - 65

The match of the round in the West was a low scoring affair despite both teams playing fast paced ofences. The defensive clamps were on and both teams had great issues with putting the ball in the hole. Glenelg were only 28/81 which was actually better than the Slammers at 25/80. Neither team could hit more than two three pointers for the match. Glenelg were very careless with the ball having 15 turnovers to 7 for Northcote but the Tigers were fierce on the glass having a huge 58-44 edge that was enough to bring them home.

3 Fan Chung Ling Glenelg Tigers 22 PTS 18 REB 9/18 FGS 12.5 rating. When no-one else in the game can score being the one efficent player earns you a few fans, Fan has a lot of fans.

2 Pier Giorgio Masetti Northcote Slammers 17 PTS 13 REB. Not an efficient scorer but did a great job on the boards when his big men let the team down.

1 Bernabé da Gudiña Glenelg Tigers 12 PTS 17 REB. We could get into a Naker debate about whether 5/13 is better than 7/20 but one thing is better, 17 rebounds.

Slam ! vs. CROCKERS 25 - 0

Slam ! get the win but no points. Come on CROCKERS you can do better than this!

Melbourne Goldfish vs. JW City Bulls 92 - 78

Big clash between divisional rivals that know each other well had few surprises in tactics but saw JW get to the line a lot more than the Goldfish by forcing the ball inside. However Melbourne more than made up for that by hitting several three pointers and having a much higher shooting percentage overall. Surprisingly the dominating JW big men weren't able to dominate the boards and the Goldfish had a slim lead in rebounds. JW made a big comeback in garbage time in the 4th to cut the margin by 13 making it look semi respectable.

3 Xie Guanzheng Melbourne Goldfish 32 PTS 6 REB 6 AST 12.0 rating. Forced to run and gun for 48 minutes again Xie must have legendary stamina. The top scorer by a mile, equal top in assists for the match he also held Joel Vulcan to just 7 points.

2 Jarrod Corica JW City Bulls 20 PTS. Having a a bit of a shootout with Bay of the Goldfish #3 on JW probably managed to stay about even with his much more fancied opponent in a solid offensive effort.

1 Arcangelo Di Nunno Melbourne Goldfish 16 REB. I can see the appeals already. "He scored just 2 points are you on crack?" Well getting a shot off when Xie is on your team can be a challenge but it was what he did in defence that earnt this big fish a vote. Not only did he have to face up to a $90,000 and a $70,000 opponent and easily out rebound both ($90,000 Yuen had just 5) but he kept his man $70,000 Cvoro to just 2/14 shooting in an offence that was designed for him.

Week Three Part Two (Not Naker Style)

Haggards vs. Billy Hoyles Boys 71 - 102

Another game for Billy Hoyles Boys and another crushing victory. The Haggards have been highly touted as a possible number two this season but they were simply no match for the Boys who dominated the boards, assists, shoot well, shut down the Haggards offence and even were given numerous trips to the charity stripe by the referee. While the 4th wasn't much of a comeback the Haggards did score nearly twice as much as they had in the previous three against the starters.

3 Yishai Keinan Billy Hoyles Boys 23 PTS 16 REB 16.0 rating. Yishai took just 27 minutes to reap this harvest on the Haggards and was then back on the bench tucking into some Gefilte and matza balls.

2 Anselmo Centurión Billy Hoyles Boys 23 PTS. This big man and his two points are obviously not enough for coachnoodles and he can be yours for a mere $1.45 million.

1 Leigham Phillips Haggards. 20 PTS 8 REB. It was a disappointing match but this long time Haggard (season 8 draft pick) was the best of a bad bunch.

Chumunga vs. Western Titans 52 - 90

Spank! The tanking Chumunga has just one decent player and he was up against the mighty Carey and Samdup. That left Chumunga with close to 0 options and this 40 point drubbing was the result.

3 Pavlas Glizickas Western Titans 19 PTS. No-one on the Titans needed to play more than 30 minutes so the individual stats aren't amazing, but the result is.

2 Norbert Carey Western Titans 12 PTS 19 REB. Controlled the glass and was against the only real opponent.

1 Pablo Lobato Western Titans 14 PTS 5 AST. Distributed the ball and kept his opponent to 2/16.

Chelsea Seagulls vs. Da Fat Boy Slim 88 - 100

The Seagulls lost the first by 11 and that was bascially the margin for the rest of the game. The Seagulls had no match for Duffman who humiliated the tag team defenders of Landrin and Larbi who went a combined 2/9 and had more fouls than points.

3 Kye Duffill Da Fat Boy Slim 36 PTS 23 REB 12/13 FTS 16.0 rating. Duffman deserves all 6 votes in this game, he was the meat, everyone else was just salad.

2 Jared Sherwin Chelsea Seagulls 23 PTS 10 REB 7/8 FTS 13.0 rating. No-one was even close to Duff Duff but Jared at least fought very hard and had a solid game.

1 Hunter Hawthorn Da Fat Boy Slim 22 PTS 10 REB 10.5 rating. Very similar stats to Sherwin but took 48 minutes instead of 39 to get them and not as good defence.
