For the first time in its history in what was a controversial decision by the League Commissioners, the Fishbowl has started before Season 16 Buzzerbeater season has even ended. Some clubs who are out of Buzzerbeater League finals are adamant that they are at a disadvantage as their players are still carrying injuries and are on holiday mode. However many fans are excited this season for two main reasons. The first being that the season has kickstarted early. But the second is that for the first time the West could potentially have twelve ABBL teams fighting for that coveted trophy. The fans are ready! Are the managers and players up for the challenge?

Season 4 Champions: Black Label Society (Formerly Guppies now Kevin)
Season 4 Minor Premiers: Baxter Bogans (Calamari)

Season 4 West MVP Winner: Grgur Fatur - 23 Votes - (Black Label Society)
Season 4 West MVP Runner Up: Giovanni Castaldo - 21 Votes - (Baxter Bogans)

Its 1am (well it was 1am when I started writing this up heheh), the SAS pull out an upset against the more fancied wombats, the dogs beat parra by 1 pt and I am one very happy chap ;) ! And now for the very first time ever, from the marketing guru himself, PTE_NGUYEN writes up this season’s first rd of westside MVP voting. Please note this will be unashamedly big men biased so without further ado onto this week’s rd of games …

While the saying is leave the best till last, screw that! In this week’s game of the week, the promotion bound SAS pulls out
somewhat of an upset by defeating aust’s no3 ranked team, the Lewisham wombats.

SASTROOPERS defeated Lewisham Wombats (111-104)

After a couple weeks of much criticism that he had been beating up on 2bit scrubs for the past 4 seasons, SAS fatcat, ky smeltz silenced all his critics 2nite with a very dominating display, going for 31pts, 22rebs and even managing a couple 3’s and asts to boot. Needless to say that gives him the 3 votes for today, he would have received all 6 votes but apparently such shenanigans were not permissible by the commissioners of the fishbowl.

3. Ky Smeltz (SAS) 31pts, 22rebs, as if it was going to be anyone else ;P

2. Would have gone to Trimailovas but his poor shooting and 6 fouls means the 2 votes goes to the big greek Panagiotopoulos (LW) with his more efficient 7-15 fg’s, 15pts and 16rebs

1. Lastly, Bustos (SAS) gets the 1 vote for simply being smeltzs’ trusty sidekick

Black Label Society defeated Zazzocalypse (87-75)

In a game featuring Smeltz’s 2nd biggest fanboy (or should I say fangirl) after yours truly, what ended as a 12 pt victory to BLS was really over by half time with the bls holding a commanding 56-30 lead. With no one person dominating for the bls the votes are as follows

3. Ky Smeltz (SAS) 31pts, 22rebs, as if it was going to be anyone else … ohh my bad this was for the previous game hehehe. The 3 votes goes to Fatur (bls) 11pts, 9rebs, 15rating as sucking up to him could mean he is more than generous when the 2 meet in the near future ;)

2. 2 votes goes to Svorinic (Zazz) whose 30pts meant the zazz’s weren’t completely blown away and kept the end score respectable

1. Howorth (bls) gets the 1 vote playing out of position @ SF and contributing 19pts on an efficient 8-15 shooting and 3-7 from downtown

Whitebeard defeated Cowboys from Hell (88-64)

Game 3 was a battle between the shark’s best, Whitebeard and Smeltz’s biggest nemesis of late, the Cowboys. Showing he is a class above the competition the cowboys are used to, WB lead from start to finish running out comfortable winners 88-64 over the also promotion bound cowboys.

3. tis was a great night for the WB bigs with the 3 votes going to Forastero (WB) for his effort of 23pts, 15rebs and a highly efficient 9-14 shooting.

2. 2 votes go to Rusconi (WB) for his tag team effort with Forastero netting him 18pts 9rebs and a couple asts

1. Rosello (CFH) gets the 1 vote for providing an entertaining 25mins yielding 17pts on 8-11 shooting, 6rebs and 6PF’s!

Kynlala Knights defeated Pancakes (120-108)

Reversing the result from when they last met in the pl, the knights were able to take the sword to the pancakes in this one and provided knights’ manager iwen with a very tasty victory. In a game littered with ABBL superstars, it was once again a Smeltz nemesis who was to prove the best on ground for the night. Eugenio “Big Dell” Dell’Asta showed all the skills at his disposal tonight and was able to score at will.

3. there’s no disputing where the 3 votes are going to tonight with Dell (KK) taking it out with his display of 32pts, 11rebs and an impressive 16rating

2. Couto Costa (PJC) gets the 2 votes with his 31pts, 7asts and 2stls keeping the pancakes in the game and cause he’s a bona fide superstar and is treated as such ;)

1. it’s a tossup here for the 1 vote between Tau and Mcarthur, but Tau (KK, 20pts, 18rebs and 17rating) pips it from Mcarthur as I did say this would be unashamedly bias to the big men also the Dell and Tau tandem proved the difference tonight as they were able to dominate inside against the 3-2 D of the pancakes

Baxter Bogans defeated Bell Park Supercats (120-92)

Tonight’s 5th game featured newcomer the Bell Park Supercats playing the west pl runner up from s4, the Baxter Bogans. Picking up from where he left off last season, the bogans ensured beer oclock would be a sweet time with a comprehensive 28 pt defeat of the newcomers. In another inside dominated game, the bogan’s twin towers got it done effectively tonight combining for 49pts, 31rebs and generally manning the inside ensuring it was a tough night for the bellpark bigs.

3. the 3 votes go to the Bogans superstar big and no doubt future Smeltz nemesis, Castaldo for his statline of 30pts on 14-19 shooting, 18rebs and 17.5 rating

2. 2 votes go to Weichhaus 19pts, 13rebs, 16.5rating, providing the 2nd pillar of strength for the bogan’s with his inside game simply awesome in fouling out the opposing C in only 25mins and holding him to a paltry 1-10 shooting

1. the final vote goes to Villaquilambre (BPSC) 23pts 10-20fgs for being the ‘cats top scorer

Koopasauraus defeated Monkey Business (136-127)

The final game for wk1 saw the shark’s leader and co-commissioner of the fishbowl, koopatrooper take on the very well balanced attack of the Monkeybiz. In a pregame interview of koopatrooper spiritual leader, Alfred Rooney, SAS fatcat, Ky Smeltz was seen trying to persuade rooney into somehow deflecting over to the SAS. Following last season’s reports that Smeltz had managed to convince former rival Kye “Duffman” Duffill to one day join him over @ the SAS, rumours are now rife that Smeltz is indeed planning on assembling an all-star team of XBB legends. NT legend wazzzzzzzza and akuma young gun avery meclean are also said to be targeted. Onto the game, after jumping off to a 22 pt lead @ ¾ time, it seemed koops would cruise on home, but that wasn’t to be as the monkeybiz rained down an amazing 19-38 3’s to just pull up short 9 pts @ fulltime. Buying up big prior to the start of this season’s pl, the koopatrooper’s new twin towers got the job done tonight.

3. in what could be the most contentious call of the night, the 3 votes will be going Deltell’s (MB) way! How the hell does a 37k sal player go for 43pts, shoot 12-19 3’s and also chipping in 6asts, all the time being guarded by NT legend wazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzza???

2. new koopatrooper big Alkan (KP) gets the 2 votes here for his dominating inside play of 25pts and 24rebs showing he could well be a very valuable asset to the koopa’s this season

1. Alkan’s partner in crime, Stojakovic (KP) gets the final nod here for an equally impressive display alongside Alkan.

Week 2 Part 1

Black Label Society defeated Baxter Bogans (99-92)
Last season finalists battled it out again with the Bogans looking to set the record straight. The Society was just too strong as they held the lead for 95% of the night.

3. Silvijus Zuras (BLS) 18 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals
Someone had to show real class and Zuras did just that. Zuras was everywhere, he also restricted Dirk Renaud to shooting only 7-22.

The 2-1 MVP votes was a toss up between five different players but the big men were the difference tonight. De Mann and Howorth both had a great game but their performances negated each other while Lopins sensational 10 points, 10 assists and 4 steals game was let down by his poor shooting.

2. Jose Garza (BLS) 23 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks
Garza did what was asked and held Weichaus to only 6 boards just before the final quarter.

1. Grgur Fatur (BLS) 21 points, 16 rebounds
In the important positional battle at PF, Grgur fought hard with nemesis Castaldo for the night with only just finishing in front in terms of individual honours.

Whitebeard defeated Bellpark SuperCats (87-71)
In a game of big swinging quarters saw the Whitebeards triumph over new Guppies recruit Bellpark Supercats. The Supercats were in the game up until the final quarter where the Whitebeards finished off with a blistering pace 24-12.

3. Jorge Feliciano (WB) 14 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks
What was impressive was his defensive effort to stop his opponent only scoring 2-13 as well as forcing 3 turnovers.

2. Alberto Garcia Ortiz (BEL) 27 points, 12 rebounds
No real help beside him the whole night. Played a fantastic game which kept the team in the game.

1. Joachim Calzado (WB) 23 points, 5 rebounds
Nothing spectacular, did the job that was required of him. His shooting from the 3 point line was not impressive but led the Whitebeards with the scoring.

Week 2 Part 2

Pancakes with Jam and Cream defeated Lewisham Wombats (98-96)
By far the match of the round for the West. An injury to Trimailovas after halftime break didn't help the Wombats cause. With pride at stake, the two Kevin big boys fought it out the whole night with a massive twist at the end of the game.

2 WTF moments + 1 BS = Negative 3 MVP points for new Wombats recruit Awang
Wombat fans are outraged with the recent signing of the Australian national superstar. Questions are raised whether Awang choked under the pressure or did it have something to do with the man he met just before the start of the final quarter who handed him a very large paperbag?

Wombats — Pancakes
4 0:07 96 — 95 Foul called on R. Jaanus (H).
4 0:07 96 — 95 Free throw missed by H. bin Awang (A).
4 0:07 96 — 95 Free throw missed by H. bin Awang (A).
4 0:07 96 — 95 M. Kuman (H) corrals the missed shot.
4 0:07 96 — 95 30 second timeout called by Pancakes with Jam and Cream.
4 0:00 96 — 98 J. Dowd (H) forces up a three from the top of the arc, guarded closely by H. bin Awang (A). Scored.
4 0:00 96 — 98 A buzzerbeater for J. Dowd (H)!
4 0:00 96 — 98 End of period.

1. 7 seconds left on the clock Jaanus fouls Awang and bring him to the line only to see him miss two free throws after shooting a perfect 3-3 the whole night.
2. Right on buzzerbeater Dowd forces a three with Awang "guarding closely" only to let Dowd score his only 3 point for the night.
3. First game of the Buzzerbeater league season up against the Bogans see Awang scream in pain after 3 minutes on the court. This sees him on the sideline for the next 2 weeks. The fans certainly won't be pleased with his performances so far.

Another difficult game to cast the 3-2-1 MVP votes. All the big men had a great game but was unable to clearly get on top of their opponents. Really tempted to give Dowd some points even after Awang shocking final seconds of the game.

3. Plinio Couto Costa (PAN) 20 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists
Just snuck in for the 3. Had no rest for the night playing the full 48 minutes with 7 points in the final term. Did well defensively restricting his direct opponents to shooting 6-16. Shocking from the 3 point line 0-8.

2. Birol Yalduz (LEW) 14 points, 8 rebounds
Did well in a team effort restricting his opponent to only 6-18 as well as 3 turnovers.

1. Maciej Kuman (PAN) 23 points, 14 rebounds, 4 assists
Kuman just got the solitary point. Good all round effort, poor shooting from the 3 point line 1-7 and failed to stop Kremer from scoring. But dominated the boards against Kremer.

Monkey Business defeated Kynlala Knights (95-88)
The Monkeys are back in business after coming back from being down at the main break. The only game in the West to feature a non mano to mano defence which may have cost the Knights the victory.

3. Dimitris Patziaras (MON) 17 points, 13 rebounds
Kept the team in the game at halftime. Patziaras would have to be pleased with Tau only shooting 3-11.

2. Duong Ton (KYN) 19 points, 6 assists
Ton's defensive pressure was outstanding which his direct opponents only shooting 4-16 although they had 8 assists between them.

1. Shi Deguang (MON) 15 points, 18 rebounds
Deguang dominated the boards but gave up a little too many points to the Knights big men. If Deguang had shot much better from the line, the Monkeys would have won the game more comfortably.

Week 2 Part 3

Zazzocalypse defeated SmeltzTroopers (110-92)
Two freshly promoted ABBL teams battling for honours. Formerly known as the SASTROOPERS, the SmeltzTroopers came into the game on a high after beating the Wombats in the last outing while Zazzocalypse was ready to bounce back after defeat against the reigning champions. With the SmeltzTroopers looking likely to tank their first ABBL season, the Zazzocalypse had it easy and won the game without too much trouble.

3. Jean-Philippe Meneau (ZAZ) 28 points, 6 assists
Equal top scorer but also shut down his opponent to only shooting 6-20.

2. Jorge Antonio Villarreal (ZAZ) 28 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists
Toss up between pre-season troll and Villarreal for the two points. Villarreal just snuck in as he soundly help create enough of a lead by 3 quarter time to see off the SmeltzTroopers.

1. Ky Smeltz (SME) 27 points, 10 rebounds
A lazy 20-10 double for the fatcat. Kept the team in the game at halftime but was no where to be seen during the third quarter when Zazzacolypse started to pile on the pressure.

Koopasaurus defeated Cowboys From Hell (94-83)
Coming back from hell after failing to promote out of the division two to the big boys in ABBL, the Cowboys would have liked a victory against the Koopasaurus boys. As usual the the Koopasaurus boys show some ugly thuggery by taking out Fitnat early in the game which eventually helped their cause. But it was still a close fight up until the final quarter as the Koop troops continue their fine start to the Fishbowl season.

3. Nikola Beltrame (KOO) 18 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks
The enforcer show exactly what he wasn't, a fouling king. Instead he controlled the game with 6 points, 4 boards and 2 assists in the final term to help save the Koopasaurus from defeat. Beltrame also shut down the Banks who only shot 6-17 for the game.

2. Wazza Kennerley (KOO) 21 points, 7 assists
A sound game from Wazza. Stepped up in the final term with 8 points and 4 assists. Defensively stopped Monaco and Fitnat from scoring accurately but leaked too many points for the 3 votes.

1. Ozturk Alkan (KOO) 14 points, 16 rebounds
The soon to be Australian citizen if he can pass the citizenship test defended brilliantly as he forced Rosello to shoot only 5-17 for the night. However this man is not a one trick pony as he show a solid game in offence shooting a comfortable 7-9.

Week 3 Part 1

Kynlala Knights defeated Lewisham Wombats (89-88)
The Knights were able to snatch a victory against unlucky Wombats even with superstar small forward Dell'Asta injured early in the game. The winless Wombats have now lost all three of their games by a total margin of only 10 points! No Awang and poor free throw shooting might have been the factors in the loss for the Wombats.

3. Aggelos Panagiotopoulos (LEW) 26 points, 19 rebounds
3 votes for Aggy, was the dominate man for the boards. Kept the team in the game but struggle for impact in the final quarter. Did well defensively but fouled out when it mattered most. Could have lost the 3 votes with 8 seconds left on the clock, Aggy fouled out on Tau to only bring him to the line and slot the winning points.

2. Shaun McArthur (KYN) 24 points, 9 rebounds
Someone had to lift in the final term and McArthur just did that with 5 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Defensively was good in stopping Trimailovas from scoring but failed to stop his impact from dishing out the ball to the big men.

1.Duong Ton (KYN) 18 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists
Had a great game but 5 turnovers from a point guard is a no no. Played well in the final quarter with 6 points, 2 steals and 2 turnovers. Similar to McArthur, defensively he was able to stop his opponent from scoring but allowed too much freedom with the passing.

Whitebeard defeated Black Label Society (78-59)
Grgur MIA meant that the chances of Whitebeards upsetting the Society was much higher. The game was played with a very defensive mind set with certain periods where neither side could find the basket. In the end, the Whitebeards triumphed with turnovers playing a major role 17-6 in Whitebeards favour.

3. Joachim Calzado (WB) 13 points, 4 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 blocks
Calzado was probably what tipped the game in the Whitebeards favour. He controlled the game with his passing as well as defensively stopping his direct opponents from having too much impact on the scoreboard or passing. General shooting may have been poor but shot from the line accurately 11-12.

2. Tommaso Rusconi (WB) 20 points, 17 rebounds, 3 assists
The Italian played a fantastic game. Scoring, rebounding and defending without too much issues against the Frenchman Borrel.

1. Jose Garza (BLS) 21 points, 13 rebounds
Tried to keep the team in the game. Other than his horrendous control of the ball giving away 7 turnovers, he played a good game.
