Manila Bombers edge out CleMeNZas Spaghetti Sauce 92-86 to win the III.1 Season 18 Championship

As the last few seconds ticked on the clock, Daniel Corono looked up the scoreboard and raised his arms. Finally, after 4 seasons with the team, he delivered a championship.

Through the first three quarters, both teams traded bucket after bucket with CleMeNZas Spaghetti Sauce clinging on a small lead. However, midway through the third quarter, the Bombers' fortune changed. Starting forward Prince Albert Pekitpekit fouled out and All-star guard Marion Sedigo aggravated his injury after being fouled by Estrera. This left the team with 5 players who were forced to play until the end of the game.

At the start of the fourth quarter, even though they were down by a point, the Bombers coached believed that they would cruise to an easy victory as their opponent were shorthanded. However, Tian Jianchao, a former NT player, had other plans. He would plowed his way through the Bombers' interior defense possession after possession. But later on, he finally ran out of gas while the balanced offense of their opponent continued to run. Later attempts at a comeback became futile when starting power forward Elviro Ching fouled out of the game, replaced by a lucky fan. The Bombers then hit free throws late in the game to seal the victory and the championship.

Just thought I try my hand at writing an article.

The Return of the Mokong

Team Mokong is one of the new teams to be added to the "ultra-competitive" II.4 League this season but Team Mokong is no stranger to League 2 competition nor are they a new face around here. In 10 seasons that the team has existed, they've been in League 2 3 times, twice in II.4.

Team Mokong had a fairy tale start when a group of role players exceeded all expectations and started dominating both League's 3 and 4 before being stopped in II.3 on their 4th season.

When asked about their return to League 2 competition, team manager and coach, Mokong answered, "During our first stint here in League 2, it became a wake up call of how competitive it is here in this League. We realized that we were not yet ready then so we went back to League 3 to hone our skills and to build up the team's chemistry and confidence."

It was during their last stint in II.4 when they were able to draft then promising rookie, Edgardo Discar, who is now a part of the U21 National Team. Edgardo Discar has shown a lot of potential and has been developing very well behind superstar Rading Sanglay. "Ed is like little brother to me. I am very proud of what he has achieved in such a short amount of time. The U21 National Team will be very exciting to watch this year.", Rading said after Discar's appointment to the National Team.

"Everything that happens has a purpose. And I believe that our time is now.", Mokong was quoted as saying after they won their League 3 Championship for the 3rd time.

Gryffinclaws' Happy and Sad endings

At Hogwards last Thursday March 22,2012, Manila Bombers' went to Hogwards to battle Gryffinclaws to advance in the next round in the Philippines Cup. After the 3rd quarter, Gryffinclaws was leading by 7. But when the 4th Quarter came in, Manila Bombers bombed the place by getting in a 19-4 run. But the match was secured by the Bombers at the last 30 seconds of the match at 88-85 which Manila Bombers was leading. Bomber's Izhar Kuperman was injured after being fouled by Jacinto Moreno Cala which was celebrated by the Gryffinclaws fans because Kuperman played a great game with a double-double and 7 assists amd 4 steals but for the players of both teams wasn't happy of what Cala did. But both teams was happy to know that Kuperman won't miss any games for the Bombers. But at the last 30 seconds of the game Gryffinclaws Goran Vuletić can't get the rebound even Gryffinclaws Center Maximiliano Castillo can't even touch the ball. At the final whistle all Gryffinclaws fans and staff was heartbroken with the lost in the close match against Manila Bombers at 90-85

But two days later, Gryffinclaws had to forget about that match to play against ellas labang. Maximiliano Castillo and Esteban Heguy had double doubles to win against ellas labang by a huge blowout, 131-25. This is the first time in the history of the Gryffinclaws to win by over 100 points. When the fans and players looked at the big screen to look at the standings we all hoped to be 2nd place this time. But everyone in the arena celebrated after knowing the Gryffinclaws are now first place over the favorite to win the season, Ciudad Grande Home Owners. Gryffinclaws' PR Manager, József Gráf, said: We will try to be the first place until the end of the season, I know it is going to be hard with Ciudad Grande Home Owners right on our tails but we can do it for the fans. For today Gryffinclaws only problem is batchoy if Gryffinclaws goes to the Finals to win the season.

New Season Blues

Francis Calo's return to league 2.4 debut ended in a bad note as Zebu Mayas lost its first game of Season 22 110-116 in overtime against the always dangerous Fleaiz. Francis Calo a former player of league 2.4 team Cebu Lakers, forced the game into overtime on a 3 point shot at the last six seconds of the 4th quarter, scored 33 points to lead all scorers on 14-20 shooting while hauling down 9 rebounds and 2 assists but Zebu Mayas was outrebounded 35 to 50 and was massacred also in the assists department 19 to 36. Mario Ga of Fleaiz lead his team with a balanced scoring attack with 23 points.

Owner and Manager of Zebu Mayas was visibly disappointed with the first game lost and this is what he had to say. "We lost a very close game as our young players got rattled by the rowdy and very loud crowd during overtime. Rizaldy Suguilon, last seasons assists champ of league 2.4 also had a bad game as he fouled out and only had 8 assists. Hopefully as the season goes our young team will find its bearings and not get rattled in close away games. And hopefully we will do better this season and not be in the relegation match at the end of the season again."

Back at 2.4. What's next? 3.12?

After 4 seasons in PPL, the Pro Tambays are now back league league 2.4. It is the manager's decision to demote the team, instead, he got his 2 "future players" namely Ernest "Sofa King"(oops) Pacquing (26682165) and Ulan "The Rainmain" Cantara (26681016).I'm planning to train these guys not as the team's core but for the future of our NT. I will make them the best SF the Pilipinas ever had, well hopefully. PH-cezzz said.

The two unriped guys of course had struggle playing with the top guns in PPL last season but "Sofa King" bounced backed in the team's first game vs Tugar&Tweety in season 22 scoring 36 points with 16/31 FG. Not bad for being trained in just one season. I hope to see some more actions on him, on the two, he's the most skilled and suprisingly, he improves a lot than the other prospect. - team trainer Somkiat Hannarong said.

The management is very excited on the team's future and looking to bounce back in basketball next season when they will be relegated on league 3.

PPL Season Openers, Action Packed with Five Games Going Down To the Wire

With a total of three overtime periods, the first games of the season show how competitive the top league in the Philippines is.

After the defending champions Another Round unveiled their banner, Lonely Hearts Club quickly went to work outscoring their opponents 28-15 in the first quarter. Another Round would come roaring back getting the lead after the third. Lonely Hearts Club made another run in the fourth and Kristóf Mellár hit a three with 18 seconds left to tie the game at 95-95. Another Round however finished the game with a 11-2 run on their way to a 108-103 victory.

After three quarters, Pampanga Dragons have a 14 point lead over Jam All Star. However, Jam All Star made a run in the fourth quarter which cut down the lead to 3. Pampanga Dragons countered with a run of their own to get a seemingly insurmountable 7 point lead with 37 seconds left. Helped by missed free throws by Calvert Porter, they were able to cut down the lead to 2 points. Fouled by Julius Mamicpic with one second left, Gonçalo Gil paid back the kindness by missing free throws of his own. On overtime, WPS Sentinels again obtained a 6 point lead with seconds remaining in the clock. The final score is 126-117 remedial kings.

Marc-Pascal Glueckert hit two threes over the last minute of the game to tie the game at 90. After a strong defense on the next possesion, Andrés Barceló was fouled on a driving layup and converted on one of two shots to give dilata a 91-90 win over Jungle Bolo .45.

Polydozels finally held heavily delayed media conference

"Ten years. It took us ten years, and hunger has never been bad than ever before."
This is the opening statement made by coach Vic Nodally during their first PPL press conference held at the PAL events lounge last night.

The conference date was moved too much due to different conflicts of schedule made earlier, and bad weather, but the unwavering coach still made sound statements that even the eavesdroppers would believe that they just recently won the promotion.

"Talk about raining on your parade." says star point guard Silvano.

Their first game was a thriller, but eventually, victory was awarded to the Dagohoy Valets, a team who was at the brink of a relegation last season. Allan Liangco, has said that even though they were elated with the promotion, proving themselves, is still their focus.

"First game we suffered a loss, that's how competitive this league is, no one is safe, except maybe for those powerhouse teams (chuckling)"

One of them, as many have known, is remedial kings, consistent kings of the PPL, and mammoths of the great 8 conference, which Polydozels are in.

"Actually, remedial kings went 5th last season..." Added Nodally, which tones down the chuckles Liangco once had, realizing how much the competition this conference would have.

And the mood of the room has changed, almost suddenly. Then the media barraged them with PPL questions.

At one point, one asked if there are certain moves that they must do in order just to survive in PPL (UPDATE: as of this time, Team Polydozel has sold Laurinitis, 2 others in the Transfer list)

"We all agree that some moves must be made. they agree and they are ready for it. No one is safe." says Nodally

There are even rumors about a coaching change, but one team board member denied such rumor.

"We are sticking with [Conelly] because we believe with his decision making and critical thinking, his traits made the promotion possible."

It might be this statement that may answer questions regarding the mid-season acquisition of Artemio Arca of Italy. The 6'7 center was the spark plug that Polydozel needed to win 11 of 12 games, including a sweep in the League II.3 finals.

"It was a total gamble, but it's a gamble for us to win, and win we did." says Nodally

Polydozel catapulted from 5th place to 2nd place by winning all of their last 7 regular season games. With Arca's speed and cunning despite lacking in height, and backup Principe's domination in the second unit, Polydozel rode a winning formula that may be used in this coming season.

We didn't see that, though, last night. As they were heavily defended throughout the game by the PPL regulars.

"Much has to be done, and hopefully the organization and coaches sees this as an opportunity to make the team better again."

UPDATE: Team Polydozel had transferred Laurinitis, Myren, and Rice, resulting in a drought of wingmen and reserve wingmen, which is a pain in acquiring in the transfer list.
